In a perfect world everything works out. In the real world and certainly sports, not everyone is going to be happy. JC has to make decisions that aren't going to please players. Whether it's the Dukes of the world or the MAAC, this is going to happen. You can speculate what all of the specifics in this case are but this is the reality of college athletics. No need to point fingers at the player or the coach.

This coach wants all of his perimeter players to be really good 3pt shooters, that move the ball. This isn't Shivers. Much more this than ".....he didn't buy into the conditioning regimen and was sucking wind in practice". I don't buy that at all. No? You really think it's Shivers' lack of 3 point shooting and ability to move the ball are what just newly became apparent to JC in late September? That was a previously observable constant. He knew what Shivers could do on those counts when he was hired, reviewed stats, and watched game tape. The only unknown variable after JC got to see everyone practice for the first time was him changing the system and the reaction to his conditioning regimen required to play that system. He makes note in his statement of the fact that part of the reason for Shiver's departure is they play differently now.

It seems like that the decision to transfer out was left up to the player in this case. JC probably wasn’t going to play him much if he lacks the “Mayham” skill set. JC was not in a position to “cut bait” on anyone on the roster given the late hire. IMO this certainly was no surprise to either side and Shivers likely had the option to stick it out and do the best he could with his skill set. Once practice began, I think it became obvious to Shivers that he wasn’t going to fit into the plan this season so he chose to transfer out. Given the timing of this, I am assuming there is no reason to question that this option was discussed way before now. The kind of guy/coach JC seems to be, I wouldn’t be surprised if he “talked up” Shivers to other programs as possibly becoming available to help give him a landing spot. I think we will hear of Shivers’ destination shortly.
This is all speculation on my part. There was a time where the benefit of the doubt couldn’t be given on either side. Those wounds are still healing. I’m buying this was a mutual decision unless someone has compelling evidence otherwise.

Hope you are right JK. I just think that there will be games when the 3s aren't falling and we need some toughness and drives to the hoop which Ashante would have provided.

I’m sure there will be many games where we will see glaring deficiencies of various types. The team certainly would be better with Shivers since there is no immediate replacement, but how much better is the question. If his heart’s not in it no matter the reason it’s best to let him find a better fit rather than make him stay and not use him much while burning a year of eligibility. Everyone is better off in the long run. No hostilities. We’ve had enough of that to last us a very long time. I think JC wants to do right by the kids.

Shooting the 3 will open up the driving lanes. While the team may be practicing shooting 3’s, they’re also focusing on driving to the hoop too. When you have 3-5 guys in the court who can shoot the 3 that’ll leave at least one or more person to be in position for an easy lay-up. Wait till everyone gets a chance to witness the Mayhem, there’s constant movement (ball and bodies). If the opposing team tries to guard the lanes we’ll shoot the 3; if they guard against the 3, we’ll drive to the hoop. If they find a way to contain us from both, they’ll get warn out in the second half because we’re moving on both offense & defense (and we’ll be playing lots of guys). All I can say is, it’s going to be real fun to watch.

we are in need of quicker more athletic players, that and those that have a solid basketball IQ..................in the big picture, Shivers didn't fit in that description, so he is likely opting for a better fit somewhere else...............

The fact that there will be games when the threes aren't falling and we need to go inside is probably why JC is loading up on big men.

The big men will also pull out their defenders in one on one situations which allows for our guards to maybe rebound misses and/or drive the Lane. If they zone us, the bigs can shoot over the smaller guards up top. Our opponents will need to pick their poison. It may that a year or two but this system will work (along with recruiting).
