If for nothing else this gets Siena's name back in the national headlines for whoever the coach is to start recruiting. That is my most important factor. You want a good X/O (see Lanier who was possibly our best recruiter but could not balance his classes and coach) but it's all about the players. Siena needs elite talent. This tweet from John Graney summed it up - “Coaching” is much more important in D-3 than D-1. “Talent” wins at D-1 and if a school with huge recruiting advantages gets beaten in the category two years in a row, changes have to be made. TWO. Not EIGHT.
@granack
Recruiting is the lifeblood of D-1 athletic programs and I doubt there was a school in the country with more recruiting advantages and less results over the last 8 years than Siena. Get off your asses!!!!Could you imagine Pitino recruiting at Siena?? He wouldn't have to cheat. Just show a kid who you're battling Vermont or Iona for his two national title rings and NBA pay stub. . I disagree about coaching being less important in d1 than d3 but agree about knowing what you have two years in instead of 8. Or better yet look at results prior to hire.

Yeah coaching is important no question. But the #1 reason Mitch and JP - especially JP - failed was they did not get top players and any talent they did have they did not develop them. When Patsos had good MAAC players he was OK or so-so. Mitch was terrible even with Rossiter and Jackson - simply could not coach. Fran was a good bench coach but he dominated the MAAC because he got Hasbrouck, Moore, Ubiles, Franklin etc... It wasn't like he was an X/O wizard. That's why Iowa has struggled. In the Big 10 everyone gets good players for the most part then it comes down to out coaching people.

I think if we are searching for a coach two years after his incidents at Louisville, I'd say go for it.
But a year after? Ehhhhhhhhhh- the current controversy still fills people minds.
But it would make Siena relevant VERY quickly if we made that move.

Money talks. Siena Basketball would finally be a money maker with Rick Patino at the helm. GREAT teams could be playing at the TU..merchandize..TV coverage..

You are out of your mind....if the admin does their homework and can get pitino they have to do it. Maybe he can hire Beilein as lead assistant with the expection at taking over in 5 years.

Instant rebuild and 8-9k in the stands! The fly in the ointment is how they dumped the program wrecker part II and Pitino’s baggage. The million dollar question is will and can the College look past it.....
MAAC sold out games every time we played away / MAAC tournament ... you think the commissioner has an interest in how this plays out?
LOL .. Hell we could even bring in Lonergan and Rice as assistants and change the name from the Saints to the Siena Redeemers😇

What teams will owe Pitino such favors that it would warrant them playing a mid-major on the road when they could just continue to have easy home wins?

Pitino! Comparing his actions to JP's and Siena's "abandonment" of Franciscan values, etc. would be a forgotten topic in less than 6 months. Conversations would center around large crowds, great recruits, winning games. (AND THE MONEY WOULD ROLL IN!)

If Darg feels his job is in jeopardy, it comes down to this hire. Pitino everyone knows will be the greatest coach in Siena history, but when this hits national news he's going to have to answer the question of why fire patsos for his conduct then hire pitino. He's going to have to handle the national media, but the reward is retiring at some point being the one that hired McCaffery and Pitino, both coaches who would be Siena basketball legends. JP resigned. 😜 Yup...Kind of😏

As a fan, it would be very exciting to see what Pitino could do. It would be far and away the highest profile hire in the area. (At least that i can remember). It would be a shame to not put the arena we have to good use, right?

I would have to disagree Iowa’s roster this year did not have the talent to compete in the Big 10.
