Belien was a done deal...Arpil 4th. After all the litigation and words like, "cause," "buyout," "investigation," things have changed...publicly. I do think Beilein was told to turn down the Marist offer and wait for Siena to open, because the school knew it was going to: A)Fire Jimmy in February B) try to get out from under his contract and not pay him. Once it went deeper than originally planned, the school has been told by their lawyers to make the whole Beilein/Siena marriage seem like an internet rumor. They may open themselves up to further litigation and lawsuits from Jimmys side if it appears that the cart was put in front of the horse in this deal.
I still think he's the schools top choice, but because of the lawyer involvement, this may have been a blessing seeing all the quality names that have popped up since the head coaching position has become open publicly. Siena suddenly putting the brakes on for the appearance of NOT having a deal already in place with Beilein, may have opened a door to some much more qualified candidates.
Pitino is, and has been my top choice all along. He's the guy this program needs right now. He's motivated beyond belief. Will work for a reasonable salary, and truly sees all the positives this program, and area, have to offer. Going over all the positives/negatives again is a waste of time. IF he wants to come here, and I was told he'd fly up here for a sit down THIS WEEK (he even mentioned the recruiting clock is ticking and how important it is to get a staff into place so they can get to work) , we'd be crazy not to take him. Meet him face-to-face, draw up a contract that totally favors Siena (Million dollar exit clause for example) and start selling 10,000 season tickets.
Becker would be a safe choice. A good one no doubt, but still looking to run at first success. No Pitino, I'd be all over him.
G-Mac isn't ready IMHO. Great guy, would do okay, but too much risk (ZERO HC experience) at this juncture.
WE need to his this hire out of the park, period. Thats why I'm gun shy of a D-2 guy getting the call. I honestly think is his last name was Bailey, we arent on him. Just my opinion.
Go get the HOF guy and GUARANTEE a ride back the top. Not just the MAAC, but the MM polls. And ask yourself one question: What guy on our current short list would rival fans NOT want us to hire?? Anyone that doesnt answer, "Pitino," is either lying to themselves, or not very bright.

Agree that Pitino would be a home run, risky but a home run nonetheless - having a Hewitt somewhere in the management chain might quell/mitigate some of that perceived risk. While I understand the concern raised in the "cart before the horse" Beilein discussion, I don't think it is a valid legal concern. The decision to let Oh-no go may well have been made early on - the file of Oh-no "issues" was growing - the only question remaining being how to get him out of our picture. Worst case a firing and payday for the remaining years on his contract. The issues prompting investigation are valid and Siena would have been foolish not to pull those strings and that plan appears to have worked. Can't see any legal basis that would have prohibited Siena from looking for a new head coach before the position became vacant - sort of similar to Oh-no's historical practice of recruiting and offering slots that didn't exist. I hope that Beilein's advice (if that story is true) was not whispered by someone at Siena and now the school may renege on what had been promised and caused him to pass on the Marist job.

A lot of folks won’t agree but the thought of having Pitino is soooooooo appealing. Becker second. Flip a coin between the rest.

The person trying to get Pitino here, and also has a lot of local influence, told me money isn't an object, and he'd commit to a 6 year deal. So basically his last job. I get all the negatives about this guy, but god damn, it's been a long 8 years and what this guy would bring to the program, AND the conference, would be off the charts!! We NEED A HR. Can't have another single. 10,000 strong every night, and the most talented roster we could ever imagine. Dream big people! 95% of you said he was a pipe dream, and here HE is reaching out to US!?! Make it happen D'Arg. Was he and his wife Mary in Vintage around 6 pm Saturday. If so I believe he would help make it happen

Agree that Pitino is so appealing. But also so many negatives around him including the current FBI/NCAA investigation. Not sure we could do it with that still pending. My heart wants it to happen, but my head tells me it shouldnt (or vice-versa, not sure which).

Caputo, Beilein and McNamara! All should be interviewed! And let Paul Hewitt be part of the hiring process! Hewitt has done what in last 15 years or so to make him a must to be part of process?

A few thoughts on Pitino for those concerned about bringing someone so dirty into the program: Pitino is 100% committed to getting another coaching job. That much is very clear based on that message from HJ and things I’ve heard from others nationally. He’s hungry as hell to prove he can win and take a little of the stain off his resume. He’d work his ass off. Pitino isn’t as crazy as you think. Siena isn’t the only school that has gotten interest from Pitino— he nearly landed the Rhode Island job, reportedly their AD had a handshake agreement but the president said no. I think Darg would sign off. I just don’t know that Brother Ed would. This would bring the fans back, lots of good recruits, etc. I’m in on this idea. Are you telling me that his recruits would meet Siena's high academic standards? (Insert hysterical laughter here) According to HJ my opinion makes me not very bright. My opinion is it's a sell your soul for another public spectacle. Been there, done that for the last 5 terrible years. But I can see where you just win types will put blinkers on and to hell with any integrity this institution may have left at this point, which is very, very little.

I feel same way you guys do-- love to see it, but Siena doesnt have balls to pull that trigger Wait! How can you guys be for this after the constant bashing of patsos behavior and rumored incidents. The sypher incident is disgusting and now all the other stuff with recruits getting "favors" is ok, as long as it's pitino?

Name I heard from a pretty reliable source last night was, Becker from Vermont. Hearing he wants to get out of town because of a personal/family situation. That would be homerun hire.

It would take a masterful PR campaign. But professionals could make this work. “Pitino goes to little Catholic school for penance and community service.”
