Siena just hired a new women’s volleyball coach. That coach has a .583 winning percentage at Niagara. Apparently Siena women’s volleyball is a storied program that made 4 straight NCAA Tournaments from 2005-2008. Maybe this new coach’s recruiting will step up at a better program and bring Siena back to where it belongs at the top of the MAAC every year. Sound familiar, anyone? I just hope the new guy has a 5 year plan in place 😉😉. www.sienasaints.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/021518aaa.html

The baseball coach probably found out he got the Siena job from a pony express rider.
Unless there's real pressure, the natural tendency is to keep them forever or, if not, go with what they have familiarity with.

I just want a new coach for Siena basketball... no more retreads...high-major assistant coach who is a dynamic recruiter surrounded with some veteran assistant coaches.

I respect a lot of what you have to say, KK, and maybe this was just a throw-away comment, but that "baseball coach" has had pretty decent success over the years, including recently. Just because he's been at the school for a long time doesn't mean he hasn't kept up or isn't capable. Tony does a really good job.

He's still been here for half a century though.

That’s the easiest job in the world as the school sells themselves. Given the choice I’d rather a fantastic low major assistant good at identifying and recruiting and coaching higher level talent because that’s what will be needed to succeed here.

Not a fair comparison on any other Siena sports teams to Men's basketball. Men's basketball is the flagship program by far. While important to the school and the student athletes who play for their respective sports, most of the other programs fly under the radar. On the topic of the Men's basketball program, the AD has been awful quite since April 3, 2017: www.sienasaints.com/ot/DeskOfAD.html

Siena blew it in 1994. IF Jimmy is going anywhere perhaps they will get a second chance at luring away their "second choice" when they hired Beyer. You all know him as JAM. He has had his ups and downs at Hofstra (currently sort of "up") but they don't pay him squat from published reports and the guy can make something out of nothing. The hell with a big program assistant who has never won a game in his life as a head coach, gimmee JAM any day down on Pearl.

JAM is on the road to retirement... we need young, energetic, up and coming coach with excellent recruiting ties to AAU. Old Joe is not the answer IMO. Maybe he was in 1994, but not now.

We need someone young and energetic to turn this around. At this point I'm fine with hiring someone who wants to jump somewhere bigger as soon as possible. We've tried to get potential MAAC lifers twice in a row and it has completely backfired.

Not directly related to Siena Basketball but if I may speak hockey for a moment, here is a different but interesting (I think) perspective on hiring coaches, at least at one school. Boston College has had a varsity ice hockey program since 1933 (5 years before St Bonaventure gave birth to Siena, out of town). In those 84 years they have been to the NCAA Tournament 35 times, The "Frozen Four" (as it is now known) 25 times. The first head coach was John "Snooks" Kelly who had played on BC's club team in the early 30's and who lasted as HC from 1933 to 1972. The only coaching job he ever had. He was replaced by one of his former players, an All-American and Olympian named Len Ceglarski, whose only two prior coaching jobs were as an assistant and then head coach at Clarkson University from 1958 - 1972, where they too were annual participants in the NCAA's. Lenny retired in 1992, and when he did he was replaced by his former assistant at Clarkson, Jerry York, who also happens to be a former All-American and Olympian from BC and had succeeded Lenny as head coach at Clarkson where his teams were also fixtures at the NCAA's. He remains the head coach at BC to this day. An amazing coaching chain. In 84 years, one of the most successful men's college ice hockey programs ever, has had exactly 3 coaches, every one of them a former standout player and alumnus, and enormously successful coaches at the highest level. But talk about limiting your candidate pool.... crazy, but it works for them.
