I just want a new coach for Siena basketball... no more retreads...high-major assistant coach who is a dynamic recruiter surrounded with some veteran assist coaches. So you wouldn't consider a 2018 version of McCaffrey? You mean ".500 Fran"? The "experts" here had him pegged from the get go.

That’s the easiest job in the world as the school sells themselves. Given the choice I’d rather a fantastic low major assistant good at identifying and recruiting and coaching higher level talent because that’s what will be needed to succeed here. Realistically you’re not going to hire a mid-major assistant certainly not a low-major assistant (you could get that coach as an assistant anyway). Assistants at high-majors can usually really recruit that’s why you go HM. Then you hope he hires a good veteran coach to get him to X/O’s. It’s a risk but life is a risk - hiring a coach with D1 experience only worked once in three times. The assistant thing is a crapshoot (could get a Deane/Hewitt or a Lanier) but at this point IMO is the way to go. It would be good if the coach had experience at both the mid-major and high-major levels.

I want an elite recruiter first and foremost.

And, just as discussion, given the choice between an elite recruiter and an elite practice/game coach, I will take the coach every time. A good coach can make a seemingly average player better and make a team greater than the sum of its parts. An average coach can handcuff his 'elite' recruits and cause them to underperform.

I wouldn't eliminate any option from the search just would zone more in on the young up and coming assistant. Ideally you want a guy who can do both. Lanier was likely the best recruiter we ever had but he couldn't coach and balance his classes. Fran/Hewitt were able to do both. But the talent level the last 8 years has been pretty low - even last year with the 1,000 point scorers and Nico had we had a bench we probably win the MAAC championship.
