There are exceptions to that rule and you need waivers etc, but by rule bison is correct.

Not according to the NCAA offices in Indianapolis, where I paced a call this afternoon.

So if Nico landed at a D-1 school tomorrow and he sat out from Jan '18 to Dec '18 (2 semesters), his senior year would only be one semester and he'd be done? The OTHER way is for a school to pay for his schooling for 5 semesters and have him play only 2? Not sure who would do that!

Therefore, he has played 2.5 years while at Siena for 2.5 years. If he transferred to another school effective second semester of this academic year and the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year, he would have met the required period of sitting out and could then play 1.5 years at the school to which he transferred. That school would pay for five semester to get play from him for three.

Wow...it is unfortunate that his handlers didn't make that call to Indianapolis, no?? Gotta feel for the kid, but maybe this is life's way of telling him he needs to handle his stuff.

I would agree, but he would have to make a really quick decision to transfer now and deal with all the changes academically and socially with little time to spare. So even though he loses the chance to play next winter, he may have better chance for success in the long run.

Nico clearly feels like he could use the stability right now to help set himself up for the next stage of his life.

This is an interesting debate. If you read the 2017-2018 Transfer Guide which can be found via google, it seems to support Bison's position. (Not withstanding what the NCAA said when knicksaint called).
I'm inclined to believe it does not matter when he transfers, since he played for the Saints this year it counts as a full year ... and he gets 1 season to play wherever he may end up. Certainly, since the spring session has started, it is a moot point.

I'd love to know who's right. Either way it looks like Nico is staying at Siena this semester, so he ll have to sit out '18-'19 at any D1 school. That means he ll sit out for almost 2 years (23 months) before he plays in his next game. That's gonna be a tough stretch for a kid that loves basketball but doesn't like class.

According to the NCAA, a "year in residence" is two consecutive semesters, either fall and spring in the same academic year or spring semester year one and fall semester the following academic year.

If you play any time during a season, regardless of how long you played, it counts as having played for an entire season in that sport. Your season of competition starts when you spend one second in competition on the field, court, gym or track
