Some Thursday morning musings. First the obvious, Siena is going nowhere without 3 wins in the tournament. So what good does finishing 2nd 4 games behind Monmouth do? Essentially 2nd or 3rd are the same and the same for 4th and 5th. Would Siena have a better chance finishing 4th or 5th?
Finishing 2nd or 3rd would get a likely first round game against FF or Rider, you get one or the other either way. Assuming a win, 2nd round you get either SPU or IC. Again assuming a win, you get Monmouth on Monday night. 3rd game in 4 days with a short bench against a team with a much deeper bench. That is a pretty tall order, it would take a herculean effort to win that one.
Finishing 4th or 5th (doesn't matter) would likely get a 1st round game against a beatable Canisius. Assuming a win, it would be Monmouth in the 2nd round which I think is closer to being a winable scenario for the Saints. Then with a win, it would be a championship game against a team Siena split with in the season in SPU or IC (although Siena can't beat IC at home for love nor money) with at least a chance of winning.
So maybe a win on Friday night isn't such a big deal. Just some wandering thoughts.

Ahh I see we have reached the old all that matters is the maac tournament phase of the season. Man, have we all been brain washed these past 7 years. How about playing for pride? For sending a message? To just plain ole win a basketball game? If not,of course the path is easier as a 2 seed versus a 5 seed. What if Monmouth loses before they even get to the championship game? Look I get it, the season it not over no matter what happens Friday, and it would be an upset. But as of right now the teams goal should be to win the game. Hopefully they have not been fed the same lines--- no need to admit defeat now to ease the sting of disappointment later.

There will be about 5,000 people in the building on Sunday, if Siena makes the championship game there will be 10,000+ including most of the student body. I'd much rather we take our shot on Monday in front of the wild crowd. Not to mention that there is a chance Monmouth gets knocked off by the 4 or 5 seed and doesn't make the finals. There is very little chance they don't make the semis.

It absolutely matters especially for a team with a short bench.
4th and 5th really make no difference other than what color jersey and locker room you're using. Maybe Siena would be more comfortable in their home one. But the 4-5 game will take place at 9:30pm on Saturday night and what a win on Sunday afternoon at 4:30pm - about 17 hours of preparation.
If you finish 3rd you play at 7pm Saturday with a win 7pm Sunday so about 22 hours of rest. And if you finish 2nd you play Friday at 9:30pm and with a win a day off and then don't play until Sunday at 7pm.

I'm with Gorvy, you want to finish as high as you can. There are advantages that come with seed and, more importantly, I'd rather come in 2nd than 5th but I may be funny that way.
That said, the perfect scenario would be Saints coming in 2nd with St Peters in the 3rd spot and Iona as the 4 seed.

Okay, I am convinced MTS, it is not just the who but the when (didn't realize #2 played Friday) so the #2 seed would be a definite advantage. Less so the #3 and 4/5 is still "mox nix".

My point (which I now concede was flawed) was that sometimes the best path to the final goal (NCAA bid) is not always the seemingly straightest line. I am and have for well over 50 yers been all about win every single game you can. My post was more in the spirit of it is not the end of the world IF Siena loses tomorrow night, and to stimulate discussion, not defeatist in the least. If you knew anything about me, that thought would never have crossed your mind.

Sports is all about match-ups. So, sure it matters where you finish. Have you seen our record against Iona in the MAAC tourney? I'd LOVE to be 2nd or 3rd and get St Peters in the semi's while Iona and Monmouth beat each other up.

Normally I'd rather be on the #2 side of the bracket and hope that Monmouth gets taken out. I don't see that happening. Since Monmouth has more depth I'd rather we play them when we are still reasonably fresh. It could result in a big let-down on Monday should we beat MU but I'd prefer that to getting waxed on national TV.

The opportunity to twice play as a relatively rested team against a team that played the day before makes the two seed a significant advantage. Regardless
JUST WIN BABY!

The 4/5 game is not likely to start until 10 PM. And the winner plays 1st vs. 1 seed at 4:30 the next day. You don't want to have to play Monmouth on less than 24 hours rest..after they have had over 48 hours rest.
Playing a more athletic team at an energy deficit makes for a quick semi-final exit.
That 2 seed is HUGE for Siena's hopes of a Monday night.

I also agree with the SPU as the 3 seed. We matchup better against them...especially should we have the energy advantage.
SPU/Siena games are physical and they lack rebounding depth...and are a team largely reliant on defense.
That is the ideal scenario, on paper.

One could argue Siena is one of the hottest teams in MAAC. If that continues..WATCH OUT! #confidence #MarchMadness

One could argue Siena is one of the hottest teams in MAAC. If that continues..WATCH OUT! #confidence #MarchMadness One could also argue that should Siena lose tomorrow they would be just 2-6 against the teams that they would need to beat twice in order to win the title....and just 1-3 against those same teams at home. .....and that the only reason Siena is "hot" is because they're in the midst of the weakest portion of their schedule.
