Check out the CBS Hoops podcast linked below that I remembered listening to last year - scoot to 53 minutes in - the conversation starts about Josh Pastner's buyout at Memphis, but the overall discussion is simply about signing coaches to long term contracts. Very applicable piece of the conversation folks are having here (besides the fact that they're talking about tens of millions of dollars vs. a tenth of that). Sidetracks to some baseball talk, but the crux of the argument is that long term coach contracts almost never benefits the school, and always benefits the coach. The contract runs through 2021 according to this source. That does not mean the buyout is in place for the entire extension. In fact, I was told by one who knows that it does not, that the buyout was not extended as part of the contract extension.
Second, if the chart is correct, there are a lot of reasons why someone like John Becker could be interested in leaving UVM for a place like Siena.

Yup, he's making $400k now. The real question is how many years are guaranteed. If it is more than 2 more years then we are stuck with him for a while.

I know. I posted that awhile ago but what we don't know is how much is guaranteed. I'm no business law expert but I do know that there must have been some consideration given. It's a lot of money for a school like Siena. This is why I was disappointed with the hire and frustrated with the way it has played out, even though I knew it was inevitable.

How do Sydney Johnson and Tom Moore get the money that they are? What have they done? And looks like King Rice and John Dunne both need new agents.

The Rice salary is from 2013. He signed a 5 year extension in the offseason, bet he's making double that now.

I have really just stayed away from this whole topic, as I actually really like Jimmy's oddball personality. I liked him before he ever came to Siena. Just a very interesting guy, in my opinion. Obviously, not everyone shares that opinion and he has, on numerous occasions, done and said things that even I find cringeworthy or even annoying.
I realize that this team is not as talented as Siena's best teams, historically, especially without Nico. But with Nico, the talent is right up there, or even better, than any team other than Fran's NCAA teams or the Mike Deane NCAA/NIT Semis teams.
I've said it before: good/great coaches create teams that perform at a level that is higher than the sum of their parts. Jimmy has yet to achieve this at Siena. There have been stretches where the team has caught fire (CBI run), but no sustainable success. Seeing the look on Marquis' face during the Canisius presser was heartbreaking. The deep frustration was readily visible, and I can't help but think that Jimmy's calling out of the players for not playing hard have to hurt, especially after he played his guts out in that game.
I don't entirely blame Jimmy for the transfers epidemic, as it is a rampant occurrence throughout the game. Jimmy's role in exacerbating the situation is in the less than diligent evaluation of the program's recruits from a talent and fit perspective. The whole doghouse substitution pattern is pretty common in college hoops, and kids used to just deal with it. Nowadays, they say "F*** it" and leave. Not everyone can get the minutes they think they deserve. How much could we use Kinnon right now?
This perceived water and oil situation with Nico and Quis is unfortunate and, I think, telling. A strong staff with good leadership at the head position should be able to manage this type of situation.
I've seen all I need to see. I won't root against Jimmy or the team...I really want them to succeed. I'd be thrilled if Jimmy could turn it around and bring us all back to the high times we've all so enjoyed. I just don't believe that this will happen under Jimmy.

Not better than Mike Paul's Rob's (yes even Rob) or Fran's teams.
Look the guy can't recruit, can't coach, has disciplinary issues, is undisciplined, lacks self control and is 500 after 13 seasons in the MAAC. He's lost over 50% of his players to transfer. The CBI title was practically purchased with all the home games. I see very little that's positive and I see an awful lot of bull$hitting. He's recruited 3 solid mid major players that stayed since he's been here, 2 if Nico leaves. Pitiful!
This program is never going to be even marginally successful with him at the helm. The sooner he's gone the better!
I never remotely liked the hire and was spot on how exactly how this would all play out.

Nice upset win by Saints last night- doesn’t change the overall problem with current staff. He still cant recruit, has wicked highs and lows and is not a good leader. If Siena can’t buy out Jimmy after this year, maybe they should look at fire/ retire whatever Darg. Get a new AD in, and give him a year to get lay of the land before hiring new coach next year. Darg has done some good things with Siena, but he isn’t a BB man, the Saints will always be on rollercoaster with Darg as Athletic director coach. Let’s face it he hasn’t done a good job hiring coaches.

There are many that agree with you Tony. I reserve judgement only because I'm not sure how much say D'Arg has on the final hire. I'm sure he has some say but I don't know if he makes the final call. Minimally I would guess that he puts together the list of candidates. I'm not sure if the school actively reaches out to candidates or just takes the resumes sent in. Since we don't know for sure it is all speculation but the last few go-rounds I don't feel like we've had the best list of candidates...considering what I think we should have.
That said, I think the Robert Morris coach was hot a while back and has seemed to have cooled quite a bit, so you never know how things will turn out. All I know is that Xavier seems to be the one school that consistently gets it right.
