Welcome to Siena, coach Patsos.
I for one felt that Siena had established a strong pool of candidates through the interview process, and felt comfortable with them landing any of the three finalists. While my preference might have edged slightly towards Andy Toole, I'm very satisfied that Jimmy is coming up north.
For those of you who feel that Jimmy was the improper hire, I urge you to look at the attached document here. I did a side-by-side comparison of Loyola and Robert Morris over the past three seasons, which has been Andy Toole's tenure as head coach.
While I am a firm believer that a coach can be hired based on what they can do, not what they've done, I still find their recent coaching history extremely similar, if not damn near identical. The thought of some that one of these coaches is a slam-dunk hire and another a terrible decision based on the past three year cycle baffles me. I think that if you put these two resumes side-by-side and took the teams off the top line, you may very well choose Loyola/Patsos.
I don't know what happened during interviews/negotiations, but I know what we got out of it. Toole may very well have been luke-warm on leaving his situation in Robert Morris in the first place - after all he is returning a TON of talent, will likely be picked to win the NEC next season, and could be poised for a BCS-type jump by next season. Would he prefer taking his chances on another year where he is comfortable, or inheriting an 8-win team that returns just about everyone for better or worse?
Patsos, on the other hand, wants to be here. Something should be said of that.
Good luck, Coach!
