Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 3m
George Mason assistant Mike Wells is in the mix at Siena, per a source. Met with AD John D'Argenio on Friday.

Somehow I doubt this is accurate. How could D'Arg have met with Wells at the same time they where hosting Toole on campus? I wouldn't be surprised if they spoke to him as a courtesy to Hewitt. But seriously, if you're gonna interview Wells, might as well interview Craig Carter as well.

How did everyone miss the boat on this one? The same reason we all missed the boat on the story that Penn State's Urgo was being interviewed - because it's likely not true.

D'Arg might have talked with him but I can't believe he's seriously in the mix. Toole was on campus and the other two are coming then they'll make the decision. Maybe it was just a favor to Hewitt. I tend to believe Rothstein over Amedio with Urgo.

It is smart to interview as many quality candidates as possible regardless of experience.

This was a gift to Paul, who told this kid to RUN up here for the job. One has to wonder why Andrew Francis was never mentioned, but Paul gets his guy an interview? Hmmmmmm.......

Why does Siena owe Paul any favors 14 years later?

Why does Siena owe Paul any favors 14 years later? Because MTS can't reconcile the fact the guy is an assistant coach.

Andrew Francis will be ready in 3 or 4 years.

This guy and Francis aren't in the same category.
1995 Assistant Video Coordinator - Houston Rockets 1996-1998 - Video Coordinator - Houston Rockets 1999-2003 - Assistant Coach - Houston Rockets 2004 - Assistant Coach - Los Angeles Lakers 2005-2008 - Assistant Coach/Advance Scout - San Antonio Spurs 2009-2010 - Assistant Coach/Advance Scout - Washington Wizards
That's a lot of time with Rudy Tomjanovich, Gregg Popovich, and Flip Saunders.
Add to that from 1998-2003 he was the head scout for USA Basketball under Tomjanovich and Larry Brown.
Now I don't think he is a particularly good fit at this juncture since he is a newbie into college basketball. But this is also a guy who has 20 years experience in the sport I don't know that I would call his interview a favor to Hewitt.

This guy isn't in Francis' league when it comes to a mid-major college job. When the Nets need a good coaching candidate, I hope they contact this guy. OR if Siena joins the NBA, this guy Wells would be my first choice! Seriously, 2 years in the Big East with 'Nova, 4 years with Fran at Siena, and now 3 in the Big Ten with Iowa. He's 38 and from Brooklyn. He's not worthy of an interview....IF Fran calls in a favor? If this guy Wells isn't on Pauls staff, there's no way he gets a sitdown. No way.

Why does Siena owe Paul any favors 14 years later? Because he saved D'Args, and this programs, ass 15 years ago.
