that was the way it was from the very beginning, although each conference still has the final say as to "how" they want their league represented in the NCAA tournament, but now all choose to run a post season tournament to determine the bid because of the almighty dollar that comes with such events.............it really contradicts all that is logical, I mean you play a full reg season in conference, and basically if you finish first for going through the long grind you get absolutely no guarantee of an invite even though you really earned it.......... certainly the power conferences aren't in peril of not making the Big Dance because of their higher rankings/ratings....but we know like the MAAC and many other non-power leagues the top team is at total risk and basically has all the pressure to win their league tournament in order to punch their ticket.......... Actually a team that doesn’t finish top of their conference but wins its tournament is a more valued Cinderella giving the pundits more to hype in the early rounds… makes for better TV ratings … isn’t that what’s it all about well the argument is and always will be getting the best teams in the tournament............a team that is lousy during the reg season and suddenly gets hot for 3 or 4 days in their conference tournament isn't what gets everyone excited, let's face facts a team in a "power conference" that has a so-so reg season but gets it figured it out at the right time of the year should be excluded as Cinderella's..........there hasn't been 1 team ever in the history of mid to low majors that has had a crazy upset in their conference tournament with that team making a run in the NCAA tournament......what you do see is the conference tournament winner from a lower rated league that was one of the top teams to begin with, and those are the ones to be quantified as Cinderalla's because they do make noise quite a bit (Butler at the time, VCU, GMason, Loyola-IL and even Saint Peter's as they finished 2nd in the MAAC)...........

First off, watching conference tournaments is far more entertaining and draws much higher ratings than regular season games. More importantly, the auto bid awarded to the conference tournament winner keeps every team's NCAA Tournament hopes alive until their final game. Without that you would have 200+ teams already eliminated by February 1st and just playing out the season. If you have a powerhouse team in your mid or low major conference then your season is over before it starts, you have no chance at an NCAA bid. With the conference tournaments you just need that powerhouse team to lose once and you've got a chance. As astronomical as the odds of Siena winning their conference tournament is there is still technically a chance that everyone gets healthy and gels and they somehow pull it off. Even winning two games in the MAAC Tournament would be far more excitement than we've had in this entire season combined.

The top power teams are scared of the 96 team format for that very reason... now instead of only having five "hard" games they will have 6, as clearly whoever comes out of the round of 96 as the 64th best team is going to be better than the hbcu team that's 64th now

To them they are all cinderellas. As green gold said, there are plenty of good teams that can knock off teams in the ncaa tournament that don't get in because they don't win their conference tournament. These are the types of teams that would make for more compelling games in the round of 64 should they eliminate the nit and expand the play in round. They could still do brackets based on the 64 by waiting to seed the teams by region until the playin round is complete.

The lower the conference the lower the seed makes for better fodder … bracket busting is where irs at for ratings … it’s the casual fan that CBS is trying to rope in not the fan-antics like us (we can get excited watching a CYO game)
