Fred "The Whipper" Miesowicz was the star center of the Chemistry Club basketball team in the IM League (also known as Bever's Boys). As a 6'5" big man, with the ball handling skills of a guard; Fred was dominant, leading the "Boys" to an 8th place finish. He guided a team with 3 other players and 4 of us nerds(one of those players was Mike Shongar,a star end on the Club Football team who actually got a tryout with the NY Giants).
Fred was a standout in high-school at VI in Albany and after his performance in the IM League, was asked by then Indians coach, Tom Hannon, to join the Varsity team. Fred was a role player on that team which included Mike Seymore and Bob Hermann. The continued cries, from the Students section in Gibbons Hall, of "We want the Whipper!", would cause Hannon to put Fred in the game. He would contribute, win or lose.
In 1970 Fred graduated at the top of his class with B.S. Degree in Chemistry; and earned his PhD. at Harvard University. He passed away on December 17th. RIP Fred.
