Could this be the saving grace for MM basketball or the final nail in the coffin?

Could this be the saving grace for MM basketball or the final nail in the coffin? My initial thought was the final nail in the coffin for Mid-Majors and they will have to make a decision on whether to remain Division 1 or leave like Hartford. They could also do what college football does and have levels like the Major Power 5's and where UAlbany football is. Requires a lot more thought though and some in depth analysis of what the actual details are, but for now, I think its going to essentially confirm that Mid Majors, one way or another are the minor leagues for the Power 5's which we are anyway.

Seems like a little of both, a death blow and savior. The majority of school will no longer have the opportunity to compete at what's considered the highest level in D1 sports. Some fans will consider that sloppy seconds and snub their nose at the product.
At the same time it removes the financial burden some schools face competing with the portal and NIL. Schools go back to the way it was before NIL got in the mix (?).
I think many schools will tighten ranks with the number of sports they offer if this type of approach happens. You'll see smaller schools being hockey, baseball or basketball centric - dropping sports that don't generate any revenue, like swimming, track, and golf. There just won't be enough money to support all the sports if the school needs to shell out 30k to each athlete for 50% of of teams they host.

Do not forget about Title 9. Colleges and Universities will need to factor it in as well if this new model is adopted and they need to make changes to their sports programs and teams.

This kills D1 as it currently stands. The NCAA tourney will be a P5 tourney. The NIT will be the MM tourney. Back to the ARC we go. No sense in playing in a big arena if there will never be an opponent to fill it.
Look at BCS vs FCS. There is no comparison between them. UA may be a great FCS team but they are never going to be U Alabama. In the mean time they are still spending a boatload on FB scholarships and corresponding Title IX female scholarships. I never thought it made fiscal sense to be in FCS and I hold the same position if it turns out that way in hoop. May as well drop to D2 and save a bunch of money. The whole alure of D1 hoop is that David plays Goliath. Unfortunately Goliath is starting to lose more often than he'd like so they are gonna change the rules.

If they take cinderella out the NCAA tournament will die a slow death.
