Obviously you want the best path (ideally best seed) but I’ve heard some on this board say when Siena goes back I don’t want a 15 seed! No chance to win!
Well this will be the third straight season a #15 is going to make the sweet 16.
Oral Roberts 2021 SPU 2022 Princeton 2023
Meanwhile a 13 hasn’t made the sweet 16 since 2013.
A 14 has only gone twice in 1986 and 1997.
A 12 seed as only made the sweet 16 twice since 2011.
It’s all about match-ups and momentum.
Facing a top 8 team is really no different than facing a top 16 team now. It’s not the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s.

This year is pretty extreme, UConn is currently #5 in the Sagarin and was a 4 seed. We had the preseason #1 team not even make the tournament. Kansas State went from nobody to a 3 seed. I'm definitely not ready to say seeding is meaningless but we are definitely moving in the direction where you can play a tougher team as a 13 seed against UConn than as a 1 seed against #10 Sagarin Purdue. Another example, even before today Arkansas was one spot ahead of Xavier in the Sagarin. There is so much parity this year and odd seeding by the committee.

Now more than ever it’s all about the MAAC tournament. This year was #1 vs. #11 for the championship. The conference and non-conference schedule is like baseball preseason at this point. Nobody is playing for a spot to qualify for the conference tournament. Let’s just take all the conference regular season winners and put them in the tournament the the conference tournament winner can earn a spot if they they aren’t the top seed in conference. You can offer the top conference seed a bye in the NCAA tournament if they win the conference tournament. Let 96 teams in, pour gas on the fire and let mayhem ensue.
