Siena crushes #8 ranked Iona 55-33 last night to remain tied for 1st place with Brown in the Liberty league. www.goffrugbyreport.com/news/siena-defeats-iona-high-scoring-midweek-matchupSiena is really good, In spite of them jumping class/divisions from their National Championship a couple years ago, Siena’s roster is mostly sophomores and freshman with only 3 or 4 Juniors. I can see Siena being great for seasons to come (assuming we can keep the team intact) and watch them grow into champions.

Finally, the Liberty Conference updated the current ranking. Siena and Brown tied W’s but Siena has the single point total tie breaker and thus seeded 1st in the conference. www.libertyrugbyconference.com/standingsPlays Iona at home on Saturday.

I think I posted this at some point last year but think it’s worth mentioning again because of what the Siena Rugby team has accomplished in three or four short years. Siena went from a club program to the Small College Cinference/League and became National Champions in that league. The next season Siena jumps a couple leagues (Skipping over D2 and lands in D1AA). But then they’re too dominate in that higher league that they were bump after the regular season into the NCR D1 playoffs (against Fairfield last year). Siena almost beat that FF team only to have three points removed after the game winning kick which made FF the victor. Fast forward to this season and Siena competed in the higher D1 league all season long and has an undefeated (6-0) regular season record with wins over ranked schools (Iona, Fairfield, Fordham, AIC, and ACC Syracuse. They’re nationally ranked by the D1 coaches poll #5 (not positive but I think there’s 47 D1 teams???). Siena plays Iona Sat at home for its first D1 home playoff game (Liberty Conference semifinals). www.goffrugbyreport.com/news/siena-moved-ncr-d1aa-d1-playoffs-heres-whyI find this interesting and it explains Siena jump/placement in D1 “ Siena, Dufek told GRR, scored a little below the threshold that would force them into D1. Siena is not strongly supported by the school, but it does have a program coordinator employed by the University, albeit not for sports. There has been a nebulous, official, but not really official, oversight situation whereby Siena Rugby is under the Athletics Department, but more because student activities was not equipped to run it. No full-time coaches, no medical ... Siena just didn't check all the boxes. Well ... aside from winning games by 90 points.” This was last season when the league moved them up to D1 for the playoffs. The league basically admits they screwed up and should have moved Siena up higher earlier. Isn’t that amazing!!! A team goes from a “club” league and jumps multiple levels arriving at the higher D1 in such a short time. AND they’re not only competing but winning convincingly in the D1!!! Hello!!! Timesunion, Gazette, Troy Record, Saratogian!!! Where are you guys!!! This should be huge local news!!! If you’re local and available Saturday, why not come out and root our rugby team onto hopefully victory!!! I’ll see you there.

Siena’s rugby alumni have been the program’s biggest $upporters … they paid for the field being built while it was still a club sport … I’m speculating that these alums were the catalyst for the program moving up in competition

www.goffrugbyreport.com/news/d1-games-playoffs-big-rivers-liberty-statement-games-d1a“Liberty has their semis with AIC at Brown and Iona at Siena. Siena has played, and beaten, Iona, but AIC and Brown have not met but it is worth pointing out that AIC lost to Dartmouth while Brown beat them.” Assuming we beat Iona and Brown beats AIC here’s some info about Brown: "We've been doing our homework on them and know there are some challenges we'll be faced with," said Brown Head Coach David LaFlamme. " Our preparation this week has been centered around their strengths. We've identified what they do well and what we need to do to keep their game under control. They have a good mix of some backs and forwards with some dynamite footballers. Last week, we started to fit some of the pieces back into the puzzle. While we still under-performed in certain areas, a few of the boys stepped up such as freshmen Tito Edjua and Theo Romero. Our scrum and lineout were working well. This is an area [where] we hope to apply pressure to AIC." Brown is looking to add to their offense, too.
