Congratulations Doremus Bennerman on receiving your degree from Siena, quite possibly the best player to wear the green & gold!! "Possibly", but not definitely. Clearly in the top five, maybe top three. Definitely top 2. Brown and Bennerman. Who would you put above them?

Does anyone else agree that this is the most exciting thing to happen to Siena basketball this off season? His game at the garden was one of the best performances I have ever witnessed. I was there. Who else was there for that game? went to the semifinal game they lost, 8 buses of Siena fans, I think that is a record as well for any road game (IS can perhaps verify that)..........couldn't make the consolation game where we beat Kansas St to finish 3rd (who also had high scoring guard Askia Jones, and I was off on that one account of highest scorer in a game because Jones scored 62pts in beating Fresno St in the quarterfinal game while Bennerman had the 51 vs KState)........that run was incredible........

That's what grandparents are for lol.

I took the train to both games. Sat next to two Villanova fans in the first MSG game and they said Gras was not much of a player. I told them that if he was any better, he wouldn't be at Siena. He was a very good Siena center but was just not a Big East center when the Big East was in their hayday.

Ah, that was a great year. That beautiful NIT run started at the Knickerbocker arena with an afternoon start time against Georgia Tech (with no place to park since all the state workers were still at work 😂). I honestly don’t know how many busses went since there were several different groups who chartered busses. I was part of the group that went by Brown buses leaving from the old Edward’s Food wear house where Capital Care is now. I don’t remember how many buses left from there. Legacy & Bill along with a bunch of regular Siena away game bus trip fans rented an entire Amtrak train that waited till the game was over to bring them back. I still remember the bus driver had the CB Radio on and the truckers were asking about all those busses on the road. I only made the Villanova game; watched the Kansas State game on TV. Man I wish I was there for that game. I still say Siena beats Villanova if Stuart Downing and Brian Bidlingmyer (Sp?) we’re healthy and not playing injured. Even with their injuries we held our own and made that game interesting. Not only did Bennerman get the record for most points (corrected points of free throws) in a NIT game and for the entire tournament but if I’m not mistaken and I’ve course the NIT MVP (outstanding player) The NIT either set the highest attendance record for the final four or it was one of the top “x” final four attendance figures. Someone will have to look that up but the place was packed. Corrected: That 1994 final four at MSG 2 sessions avg 15,906 fans a feat never achieved since then. You have to go back to 1981 to beat that MSG avg. Then of course some of the of the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and one or two in the 70’s avg more than 1994 but the NIT was big back then sort of like the NCAA now, I think.

Who would you put above them? “If” Bennerman started all four years he may have ended up Siena’s all time scorer. JMO But I love Brown because he elevated Siena and was part of our first NCAA victory. Show Biz was fun to watch.

Still say Bennerman is the best Saint I ever saw, and that includes Brown. I can understand that. My reasoning for saying Marc Brown is still my all time favorite Saint (Indian) is I feel he was a more complete player than Bennerman (IMO). If Bennerman started all four years there’s no question he’d be Siena’s career points leader. Marc not only could score whenever he wanted but he was the career assist leader until Ron Moore dethroned him (Bennerman ranks 5th all time and I don’t think him starting all 4 years would catch Brown’s total assists). Marc also ranks 4th all time in steals (Bennerman’s not listed in top 10) so I consider Marc a better defender than Bennerman. Don’t get me wrong, I love Bennerman but I just think Marc was a more complete player while at Siena. Plus I attended Siena two years when Marc was there so the excitement on campus winning that first ever NCAA game was something I’ll never forget.

Saints lost the semifinal game to Villanova 66-58.
Here’s some comments from a NYT article about the game:
“About 6,000 Siena fans came down from Loudonville, N.Y., traveling in about 100 charter buses and an Amtrak train, from nearby Albany, that was put into service especially for the fans. They swelled the crowd to 16,978 and put a charge into the atmosphere. It was the largest crowd at an N.I.T. game since the Tulsa-Syracuse championship game in 1981.
Perhaps if Siena had been at full strength for the game, it would have been able to match the Wildcats' speed. Saints guard Stuart Downing had a sprained knee, but he put on a green brace and played. And junior forward Brian Bidlingmyer had a severely twisted left ankle. But he was wrapped in tape that extended to the bottom of his kneecap and played.
‘We're not a team capable of playing a Big East team when those guys aren't capable of playing their best,’ Siena Coach Mike Deane said. I appreciate their effort’."
Saints shot 23-67 from the floor (34%), and only 3-17 from three (17%); Villanova shot 21-52 (40%) and just 2-17 (12%) from three. Siena was 9-16 at the line, while Villanova made 22 of 30. They also outrebounded the Saints 48-37.
Stu and Brian played only twenty-two minutes each. Brian didn’t score, and Stu had only two points. Matt Gras, who IS says some Villanova fan said “wasn’t much of a center”, played thirty-five minutes, scored 17 points and had nine rebounds. And seems to me that Matt was hurting for that game, too.
Doremus had twenty-one points on 9-18 shooting from the floor (1-6 from three), 4-4 at the line, and 1 assist. Villanova’s All-American, Kerry Kittles, also had twenty-one points (8-18 from the floor; 0-7 from three; and 5-6 at the line).
With Brian and Stu limited in their playing time, Andy Thies (twelve minutes and seven points), Mike McGhee (twenty-five minutes and three points and five rebounds), and Brian Balser (eight minutes and four points) filled in for them. Other Saints who Mike put on the floor in the last minute were Jeff Muszynski, Andy Shorkey, David Attewell, Harel Gadot and John Hayden.
