It really hurt yesterday when I saw that Tom Seaver had passed away. As a young adult, I watched and listened to as many Mets games as I could, and never missed a Tom Seaver game.
Saw something today that reminded me of just how good….great…..he was. In 1969, the Mets trailed the Cubs by eight games on Aug. 21. They finished the season going 32-10, and won the division by eight games. Of those last forty-two games, Seaver pitched eight games, won all eight, each one a complete game, and had an ERA of 1.00.
His career numbers are astonishing. Should have been unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame, but five baseball writers didn’t put him on their ballot (one guy said he forgot to vote for him; what was the excuse of the other four?). Ended up on 98.8% of the ballots, the highest percentage total in baseball history to that point.
Loved that “drop and drive” pitching motion….the effort that he put into every pitch. I see that the Mets players tonight put a dirt patch on their pant leg by the right knee in tribute to the greatest of all Mets.
Rest in peace, Tom Terrific! Thank you for the memories.
