I just think that hiring a person of (too be charitable about it) of highly questionable moral standards should bring about the populous response it has, shows the moral standard of our society today. The more I look into this. the more crazy ( or desperate) I think Iona is. If Pitino is hit with "show cause" penalty this could backfire on Iona big time. As any sanctions Pitino gets not only affects him it affects Iona. And if somehow Pitino is cleared he will drop Iona like a hot potato. I guess Iona hopes this drags on a few more years. in meantime Pitino gives Iona great exposure and brings in some quality players. Waiting in wings is Cluess who is still on contract at Iona as special adviser. Iona's talent is down so low its probably going to take Pitino a few years to really get his players in there Iona gets a HOF coach- so potential is there-- just the road is littered with landmines for gals. We will probably know more in next month or two as NCAA hits Louisville with NOA. Make no mistake about it, this is huge gamble for Iona that has potential to blow up in their faces big time- it is as far from a sure thing as you can possibly get. Best case scenario for Iona is gals get a few good years out of Pitino

RC Would you hire a known pedophile to run your day care activity? You do forgive them but don't throw temptation in their way. By the way you just agreed what I said before. After all that has happened with him, " How can he recruit by name only?

What about forgiveness and second chances? All this moral high horse stuff is nonsense. Pitino doesn’t have to cheat to win at Iona, get a grip folks. He can out recruit on name only. We’re lucky to have him in the conference. Deal with it. I hope Carm can beat him straight up consistently. Wanna make a bigger name for Siena, here’s the chance. Just the kind of thinking that Iona administrators must have used to rationalize the hire. Well done!

They have to live with the fallout good or bad, unless you feel bad for the poor Iona fans. Also, you do realize Iona has had a bit more of their fair share of good luck with the NCAA right?

I read on the Fairfield board some there want a move to the Patriot League because of the hire, talk about extremes. It’s as if Satan himself has been hired to coach Iona.

First chance was after banging the waitress on a table, second chance was after supplying the recruits with hookers, third chance was after the whole Adidas fiasco. We are talking fourth chance at minimum here.

Agreed-- no question Pitino can coach-- he is definitely one of top 5 coaches in last 30 years( some might even say the best in last 30 years) the fact he is HOF coach alone will bring in transfers. You are kidding yourself if you think he wont bring in talent-- no he wont get 4 and 5 star recruits, but he will attract high level top 100 type transfers to Iona who for one reason or another didn't work out at prior school. The downside for Iona is good chance Pitino faces some sort of NCAA penalty at Iona - including the possibility of a show cause penalty. Possible 5 game suspension to start season. If Rick is somehow cleared by NCAA he will be out of Iona in a NY min-- cant see a 68 ( he will be 68 before he coaches a single game for Iona) multi millionaire enjoying bus rides to Rider/Monmouth etc. Let alone coaching at Yantelli in front of 500 fans. So it is unquestionably a double edged sword for Iona- this can easily blow up in their face
In meantime his hiring brings unparalleled exposure attention to our conference - The Siena/Iona games immediately become candidates for ESPN/ESPN2. And in long term I dont see Pitino at Iona more than 2 years- either NCAA kills him off or he gets cleared and blows out of New Rochelle as fast as he blew in
All I know is we have a pretty good team next year- potentially a top 50-100 type team - so even a HoF coach has his work cut out for him to transform Iona in a single season- the talent level at Iona is probably at a 10/12 year low

We are probably still a ways from talking about Siena as an at large candidate but fact remains, to get an at large you need those top 50 wins and the easiest way to do that is to have another top 50 team in your conference.

All we have to do is beat them twice a year. Maybe 3.

No I wouldn't hire a pedophile for a daycare because children can’t defend themselves. We’re talking about adults and if the folks at Iona are adult enough to hire him they’re adult enough to suffer the consequences of said hire. We’re not talking Jerry Sandusky here.

Or will an already reeling NCAA just turn the other cheek, desparate to regain its pre-corona status?

Could it be Pitino is using Iona to force the NCAA’s hand to hand down the punishment sooner (he’s back coaching amid allegations of wrongdoing - the NCAA may take swifter action)? As was said, if he’s cleared that opens a lot of jobs in the Power Conferences immediately. If he is not cleared then he may be able to coach again at a major school after serving the penalty. I really hope this is not a coordinated effort between Iona and Pitino to get him back coaching by forcing the NCAA to move quickly on the punishment. It was reported that Pitino has high power friends at Iona. Maybe Pitino was get a punishment, step down, and Cluess is back in the driver seat. Iona goes on like nothing happened. They get exposure and Pitino to start recruiting for them. However, the NCAA could slap Iona with a punishment for hiring Pitino. If they do that it would be a black eye for the conference and the conference rating may tank further.
