Fwiw, i think it is great for the MAAC-as many posters have written, the league has blown for a bit now. And since Iona has zero academic standards, they will probably get top guys quickly, so they will be competitive. I'd be surprised if NCAA does anything (he is a college hoops icon) and I actually believe this might be his last stop...i remember how well he spoke of Siena when we played Louisville all those years ago. Might be just fun for him, for the next few years-he is 67. And if he lives in NYC with a son in Harrison, kind of a great life situation at that age. How many of use can get paid what he will get at 67? Just my $0.02.
Anyone know what really went on during Siena's supposed discussions with him a couple of years ago? did we lose out because of $$$? Thanks as always for the great info.

Its going to be fun-- Siena and Iona haven't been good at same time since the late 90's..so that alone should be fun-- I expect Siena to be minimum top 100 type team next year-- and depending on what happens with a few roster spots maybe better- Pitino is starting from scratch- Iona has nothing returning but a few role players off a team that has struggled to break into top 200 the last 2 years- so Pitino has his work cut out for him. I know Siena will be good next year. Pitino may have some NCAA trouble, been out of AAU circuit a few years, how much will the bus ride to Rider/ Monmouth affect a 68 year old multi millionaire. Should be fun, hope Pitino makes it work at Iona- can only help Siena and hopefully the entire MAAC He’ll buy an upgraded bus........... With stripper poles and all...

I'm not sure if this will blow up or be an impressive comeback. Makes me nervous, he usually finds success. Bright side, Dickey V loves him so the MAAC should get some good coverage.

I am a big Siena fan and as far as Iona goes,i wish they could have picked anyone but Rick Pitino!I may have been in the minority but i was all for hiring Pitino after Patsos. You see,I am also a catholic and truly believe in redemption and not making disparaging remarks like many on this forum concerning Pitino and for that matter Cluess.GO SAINTS!!

I was against hiring Pitino when it was being talked about in '18. Too much ugly backstory/baggage. I don't think hiring him then or now is really an integrity move. Flip side is fan interest and W's...hard to resist that.
He will draw talent that the MAAC doesn't normally get, and he can out-coach anyone in the MAAC. No offense to Carm who, until yesterday, was arguably the best coach in the conference.
Time will tell, but I predict Iona will end up in the NCAA tourney next year.
This is why I was so crestfallen when the tournaments were cancelled - there are no guarantees of a return to the top of the league. Shit happens.

Good for the MAAC long term, complicates things for Siena short term.
I see a lot of wishful thinking that he'd only stay for ~2 years before leaving for a bigger program but I'm not so sure. The man is approaching 70, I suspect he's reflected on his legacy since being outed from Louisville and may seriously want to build a new program. For the record I was in support of hiring Pitino back when there were talks, let's hope he has no ill will about how negotiations turned out..
Every mid major fan in the country has wanted their school to be "the next Gonzaga" for over a decade, eventually one will achieve it. As for the WCC comparisons, it would take years of success, or quite a few OOC upsets, for the MAAC to consistently be a two bid league. Though we did send two teams earlier this decade, maybe Iona will actually win a tournament game now.
Recruiting will be key but I have confidence in Carm. Long term our goal remains the same: be the best program in conference and look to "move up" down the road.
That said, ignoring any NCAA rules on conference transfers, if the MAAC offered the A10 to immediately swap Siena/Iona for La Salle/Fordham or Duquesne or St Bonaventure, who says no?

I see some Siena fans are panicking- NO need. No doubt Pitino will win at Iona, but his presence in MAAC will elevate entire conference. Personally I welcome Pitino to MAAC- while I expect him to win at Iona, this is far from a slam dunk. Look no further than Gonzaga in West Coast conf. over last 20 years while Zags have dominated did you know St Mary's has 14 -20 win seasons, 7 NCAA trips including a elite 8 appearance. A rising tide lifts all boats. I wouldnt trade the next 3 to 5 years with Iona at all. Good luck to Pitino and Iona www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Iona-men-s-basketball-hires-Rick-Pitino-15131736.phpThis is the way I WANT to think( makes me feel better). I'm torn on how well he will recruit. No doubt he will get ballers but as far as people thinking he's getting the best, including one n done players, ain't gonna happen. There would be more to lose than gain by going there.
