A hot topic after the cancellation of the NCAA tournaments has been the discussion of additional year of eligibility for the sports cut short by the recent pandemic. Both for spring and winter sports the NCAA is considering the options available to the student athlete.
For the purpose of this thread let’s leave it at winter sports specifically for basketball since this is a basketball forum.
Many coaches are coming forward saying let’s give these athletes another year (full year) of eligibility.
I’m not sure what to make of the intent from the coaches. Are they representing the best interest of the student athlete or are they pimping a bad situation to make life better for their own career? It’s a slippery slope when it comes to special circumstances and how the NCAA moves on this will set a precedent for any nuance and claimed similar special circumstance that comes after this decision.
I think there’s a flurry of questions that develop. What happens to the scholarship’s levels? If the scholarships are increased how can the small schools underwrite the additional scholarships? Can the seniors just transfer to another school without penalty if their current school can’t support the additional scholarship? Does extra eligibility only apply to seniors; what about underclassmen? I’m sure there are a few other immediate questions that are not listed here.
The driving force or main comments in support of additional eligibility are being tweeted hourly; “the kids deserve to finish what they started”. “They worked so hard to get to this point.” “They deserve the opportunity to showcase their talents for the next level”.
I feel for the athletes but at the same time, and maybe this is me being a parent; that’s life folks.
Sometimes shit happens, it isn’t always fair and sometimes it just plain sucks. As I tell my kids when they have sets backs or things don’t go their way; These are the moments in life that define you as a person, how you pick yourself up, brush yourself off and carry yourself forward. It hurts, it stinks, but it will, and I promise you son (daughter) – it will make you a better, stronger person.
With all that said I can’t image a parent, coach, athletic director anyone involved with guiding young men and women pimping a do-over because life got in the way. I think it’s a bad example to set and at this point in time strongly opposed to any extra eligibility for the basketball athletes.
How do you feel about granting eligibility because of the pandemic cutting the tournament portion of the season short? If you support extra eligibility how can the NCAA make it work and make it fair for the low and high major schools?
