Brian Parker of Marist won MAAC player of the week while Neftali Alvarez of Fairfield won MAAC rookie of the week. Congrats go out to both but with that being said I do believe Pickett was more deserving than Alvarez. Stat lines per ESPN after 2 games: Alvarez: 16ppg, 5rpg and .5 apg Pickett: 13ppg, 3rpg and 7.5 apg Alvarez with a 1-8 a/to ratio while Pickett's is 15/3.
Thoughts on this?

Definitely would have gone with Pickett, but not surprising to me Given the MAAC virtually ignores all state other than PPG. Reese not getting POY last year over Dukes and Nelson was an absolute travesty.

Perceived bias against Siena.

Besides Alvarez having higher counting stats in what people see first (Pts & Reb), Pickett could have been hurt by poor FG pct (30% to 50% for Alvarez). That being said, Pickett's assists and Ast/TO contributed more toward team success. Pickett had a better PER (19.4 to 18.0) and was worth a third of a win in 2 games while Alvarez was worth a tenth of a win. Pickett should have won if voters looked beyond the first few numbers on the ledger.

MAAC almost always go by points, it's still early Jalen will win his share of ROW awards. I haven't seen Alvarez yet, but I have seen Jalen two games, and I like what I see, he is a good one. Love his confidence without being cocky

Not to mention, but they lost to Army and beat perennial powerhouse Columbia in their two games. Sort of like Providence and GW I guess.

Also they picked Siena for last place and they don't want to be wrong this soon. How can a last place team have a weekly Rookie award.

Love his confidence without being cocky I really think the claims of "Siena bias" are unsubstantiated, especially when Alvarez won the week in ppg and rpg including a cool handed game winning drive with 2.5 seconds on the clock. This can be a tough call and you can always debate the selection when multiple players have a great week, but don't think this one is one of them. I think Tony has it right and Pickett will see his share of ROW honors. Have not seen Pickett yet, but did watch Alvarez in his first two games and he was impressive. And if you look at the history of the MAAC, how can you claim bias against Siena? Good Luck to both guys for a great season. It will make the head to head games even more interesting and fun to watch.

Love his confidence without being cocky Honestly it could have gone either way but, the high scorer often wins and in this case, Alvarez also put up better shooting percentage and rebounding numbers. Most importantly Alvarez won a game on a shot with 3 seconds left which was probably also a tie-breaking factor in the decision.
