some 21 and 22 stuff here
he Albany City Rocks team was still in the process of holding tryouts when the COVID-19 pandemic ended that process and the final rosters were not finalized. Now, the NIKE EYBL team is in a virtual hold pattern as they are waiting on more information on whether they will be able to play this summer. Fortunately, many of the players from the 2022 class already had significant offers and interest.
2022’s
Riley Mulvey

A high major rim protector 6’11” C Riley Mulvey (Albany Academy ‘22) capped off his season with loads of new interest. NYCHoops.net spoke with the center father Martin Riley about his offers and interest, “Riley has offers from Iowa, UMass and Siena. He did an unofficial with Rutgers and Iowa. In June he will talk with Maryland and Notre Dame. He has interest from Rutgers, Marquette, Stanford, Providence, Vanderbilt, Yale and Creighton,” said Mr. Mulvey. Albany Academy head Coach Brian Fruscio talked about his center skill set, “Riley is a rim protector. He played well in the first half of the game against Long Island Lutheran, but Zed Key was sort of better than Riley in that first half. But in the second half Riley changed the game he really protected the rim. Zed had trouble scoring the ball. It was close because your trying to score over a 6’11” athletic kid. Riley has gotten more athletic by the day. As a tenth grader to see his development it is kind of exciting. I coach his older brother CJ who got super bouncy going into his junior year. By his senior year he was super bouncy, he was 6’7” if that happens with Riley, we will be excited,” said Coach Fruscio.
The 6’4” PG JJ Starling (Charles W. Baker HS NY ‘22) is still uncertain of where he will attend next season. NYCHoops.net spoke with the father Patrick Starling about his plans for next season and whether prep school is an option, “We are thinking about possibly attending a prep school but not reclassifying. There are a few prep schools were looking at right now La Lumiere, Brewster, New Hampton and Vermont Academy,” said the father. The point guard then spoke about his game and offers, “Yes, I work on my handle a lot. I am creative with the ball. I feel like that is a big part of my game. I focus on making three’s this season and shooting from an NBA range. I did a 100 three’s this season. I also focused on my mid-range game this season, so it is good. It is about winning. I am never too concerned about my stats because that is selfish. It’s about the team and what I can bring to the team,” said JJ Starling. The guard then talked about his offers, “My offers are Siena, Syracuse, St Johns, Washington University, Alabama and Providence. My interests are Florida State, Notre Dame, UCLA, Ohio State, North Carolina, Iowa and Washington State,” said Starling.
Dasonte Bowen
Dasonte Bowen
No quarantine blues for this 6’3” PG Dasonte Bowen (Worcester Academy, MA ‘22). Worcester head Coach Jamie Sullivan praised his elite prospect, “I been at the school for 22 years we had pro’s. He is just as good as any young point guard we had we had Jarrett Jack (NBA). Dasonte played last year as a freshman. He has good size, positional size at 6’3” with a good body. This quarantine has him absolutely jacked now he very athletic. During the second game of the year I told him you are not a good dunker because you have not dunk on anybody. He then goes out on the court and dunks on somebody! He can make passes that right now some of our lower level basketball players cannot catch. He breaks noses! Because he is going so much faster than any of elite guys can catch. He played as the starting point guard along four other D1 players this year as a sophomore. He just terrific! Dasonte shoots the midrange, his handle is extremely tight. He has kind of an old school game too. He still uses behind the back to get to where he needs to go. He uses the rim to his advantage. He also drives it and plays off two feet and can get it to guys so they can finish it,” said Coach Sullivan. The Coach then talked about his offers, “Dasonte has received offers from Georgetown, UMass, Iowa, Rutgers, URI and South Dakota. He has interest from Michigan, Purdue, Providence, Texas A&M, St. John’s and UConn,” said Coach Sullivan.
A rebounding machine 6’9” PF Jai Smith 6’8” (St Thomas More, CT ‘22) is the youngest player on his team. The forward spent his past season learning from one of the best veteran head Coach Jere Quinn. The Coach spoke about his player, “He a rebound machine! He is strong and athletic. Jai can score around the basket. Our goal with him is to get him to take more risk. We like to get him to shoot the ball more. He the youngest to ever compete with us he had a really good season,” said Coach Quinn. Smith holds a few D1 offers and interest, “My offers are UMass, Rutgers, Siena, San Diego, Saint Louis, and Oregon. I have interest from Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, UConn, Maryland, and Texas Tech,” said Smith.
