With a strong recruiting coach and staff can Siena land top talent from the Northeast and get some to stay home? For years the program was building toward being able to snag top 250-400 kids nationally and was able to get players like Tom Huerter, Jeff Robinson, Edwin Ubiles to name a few to stay home and wear the Green and Gold. We now have a coach who is known for his work ethic and recruiting prowess yet some posters are poo pooing the idea of some of the better players in the area staying home. So which is it - can Jamion and staff to get some top area kids (ie City Rocks) to come to Siena or is that no longer possible?
For the record, I still believe all the pieces are there for Siena to build a top flight mid-major program. By that I mean RPI average in the 50-125 range. Siena just needs a strong recruiter and good bench coach.

Whether he does it with local players or not there is no doubt Siena could become a top 50-125 program again. People thought Siena would or could not lose patsos. lol on that one. People thought Siena could not pay for a coach that had d1 experience winning championships. Done. People are about to be reminded again that winning coaches win.

I couldn't agree more. Nothing is a sure thing but and I'm not a gambler but I'd put money on JC.

Agree as well re: getting back to the top of the MAAC. Let's give guy some time. It might take a couple years, but I am confident we will see progress next year. The tone has already changed in recruiting.

What happens if Siena comes in dead last next year? I should rather say, what type of finish will keep the JC happy train status a live?

Yeah, I don't think the Saints are far off from being that top 125 team. They were top 120 for 2 out of JP's 5 years and everyone here thinks he was an utter disappointment.
I couldn't care less where he recruits from as long as he is recruiting kids that fit his preferred style of play and will be excellent representatives of the college. (High character) If he happens to like some local recruits and can convince them to come to Siena, great. But if he doesn't, so be it.
That said, I don't traditionally pay a lot of attention to recruiting. The coaching staff is responsible for having a vision for the program and then achieving it. I leave it up to them to figure out how to get there.

Let's not forget the Dump Lanier signs midway through his first season in Loudonville. Seems like the fan base has taken to JC more than they ever did Lanier, but it will be interesting to watch.

The tone has already changed in recruiting. I totally agree! Everyone is going to have to have a little patience to get this mess turned around. I certainly think this young man has the attributes needed to help build a solid program. It's again exciting times for Saints basketball!! The last couple of weeks I've been so excited about our program. It has the feeling and anticipation like the first time you meet someone special. You're all excited but you hold yourself back not wanting to expect too much too soon. Like a relationship, we hope for the best but have to work hard for success. I think JC and his staff are going to work hard for us all and this story should have a pretty good ending!!

What happens if Siena comes in dead last next year? I should rather say, what type of finish will keep the JC happy train status a live? Given the mess JC inherited, I don't know think anyone would be surprised if they finished last. But I don't think they will. I think JC's style of play alone will catch enough teams off guard who haven't seen it before. Enough to eke out surprises in some games they probably had no business winning. That and I think some of the returning players are going to shine in this system when we didn't think they had it in them. I'd like to see who they get for the final scholarship spot and see some of the newcomers in action before I get an idea of what their ceiling is next season. But personally, for me any improvement in the overall record and/or avoiding the PIG would show me things are heading in the right direction. Make no mistake though - this is at minimum a two year rebuild. The team will be a majority of JC players by then.

JC will know how to adapt in-game, a skill Jimmy and his assistants seemed to lack. That alone should add a win or two. But agree with Sienafan on the two year rebuild.

I typically start really looking around the league at recruits and pieces in like August. Once I do that I usually start to get a pretty good picture of where Siena stands.
The MAAC is still recruiting and landing players. There's also 2 other coaches new to their schools. I expect Marist to be more competitive next year with Dunne.
JC may talk a good game, have positive energy, and recruit to a style but the league seems to be looking more competitive. I like that he knows what he is and he recruits to that but I'm both a bit skeptical of his style itself and leery of the tougher MAAC competition.
Iona, Rider, Canisius, Quinny etc...these teams aren't likely going to just roll over and die any time soon. Isaiah Reese is just a junior. Unless the guy transfers out or joins the Celtics, he's going to be there 2 more years. Molson too...and Stevie Jordan..and Frederick Scott...and...
We still have to go thru these guys to win for 2 to 3 more years.
It's one thing to beat a down MAAC or win the NEC without being able to rebound...but it's another altogether to win in an up MAAC vs. teams who are either dominating you on the boards or playing the same style as you only better and more experienced at it.

I'd say a last place finish would be a huge disappointment. Winning coaches win, so I don't expect a last place finish. Heck, didn't Mitch and Jimmy both avoid a last place finish?
That said, I'm not expecting a top 3 finish either. I'm looking for a similar progression as Paul H and Fran M...tournament by year 3!

Honestly, I'm not even sure we'll see a top 5 finish until year 3 if only because of the experienced competition.
Rider, Canisius, and Iona will likely already be there next 2 years. Dunleavy will probably have Quinny in there. FF just landed some big pieces that could get them to compete for 5th too.
Monmouth and Manhattan will likely continue to middle enough with their toughness to hang around the 5 or 6 spots routinely. SPU and Marist could both be similary pig border competitive long term.
Maybe Niagara drops like a rock post Dukes and Scott but that's 1.
It's likely going to be an uphill battle for awhile.

we finished in a tie for last this past season.............we have even less talent right now than we did then...................just food for thought..............that being said, a lot of positives are happening for the program for the first time in a very long time..............let's see what JC can do...........
