I'm not big on transfers myself- generally. Much rather have 4 year players- if your coach is recruiting top talent( something Mitch hasn't been able to do) but I'm not against getting a key transfer here or there. In fact next coach at Siena will probably have to go that route to plug a few holes at Siena next year. As for Mitch reasons..please "I struggle with it because I brought guys in as high school kids, and you're essentially saying to them, 'We don't think you're good enough. We want to bring in somebody better.' " As a coach I would always want to bring in somebody better-- if it was a 4 year player or transfer. The 4 year players gives you much more stability and consistency- again as long as you are bringing in ALL MAAC type players. Fran used to say you need to bring in at least 1 impact player per year. In Mitch case as his recruits have played more the team has regressed - just another in a long line of failures by Baghdad Mitch Most other MAAC programs usually are lacking one or more of the following attributes - they dont have the facilities, fans base, media cover or tradition to recruit top 4 year athletes and try to go the transfer route to catch programs like Siena ( Normally) www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Transfers-become-pervasive-in-MAAC-4226439.php

I agree, this article is more excuse building. The notion that siena is losing because it doesn't have transfers is absurd. There is no evidence that suggests that transfers are needed to win NCAA tournament games. So far, all of the recent maac transfers have accomplished nothing out of the ordinary. The article doesn't even provide solid data to support a trend of transfers nationally. Basically patsos likes them (no NCAA wins) and now baron and cluess

"I'm more the proponent of four-year guys and making them better," Siena coach Mitch Buonaguro said. "
now are his rookies & sophs better at this stage?

"I'm more the proponent of four-year guys and making them better," Siena coach Mitch Buonaguro said. " now are his rookies & sophs better at this stage? That’s why his name is Baghdad Mitch- few of his statements are based in reality – His defense is good So and so is a key player—so it’s tough (despite the fact that key player would rot on bench in certain games) We are a good home team ( his 2-7 record says otherwise) So and so is good ( no matter how mediocre or in some cases bad the other team is) My teams play better when I have more than one day to prepare ( his record is equally horrible when he has 2 or more days to prepare) We are a good road team ( said earlier this year to Marissa jacks) And those are just a few off the top of my head—if I thought back could probably fill of a page with his statements that have no basis in reality--- some might call it insanity. I’ll go the polite route and call him Baghdad Mitch

Another example of how antiquated Mitch is. Gonna be hard to climb back to the top when we take years to develop talent. The other schools will just reload every year with experienced transfers.

Over a year and half ago, I was the one that brought up transfers. I did so on the premise that the only way to overcome Mitch’s coaching talents was to overshadow them with a proven high scoring JC or transfer guard. As I said before, it was the only way he could have saved his job. If Fran didn’t take our recruit with him, we may not be having this conversation. If you're winning, it doesn't matter what type of game we play; walk or run. Coaches are like players, they both say “I am the best one on the floor” which is the right attitude. But when the clock starts, you must walk the talk and we all know now that Mitch can’t “WALK”…….

Siena is will need 3 impact players !
1.I think that the next coach will have to bring in a top transfer. They need that impact player that will bring this team to the next level- the Kenny Hasbrouck or Ubiles type !
2. Some where on this team is Siena's other 2 impact players...with the right coach - like Paulsen or Toole- their talent level/numbers will increase by a ton ! I expect these players are Poole and Bisping !

There should be a distinction between transfers and JuCos. We've had transfers who have done very nicely, such as Josh Duell. It's not a panacea but the door shouldn't be locked on transfers. I'm a bit more leery about JuCos.
