What makes a great Siena basketball coach.
I have thought for a while about the qualities in the successful coaches we have had in this program.
Great recruiter-This is probably the most important thing. We need the next Hasbrouck, Moore, Ubiles, Scoop, etc. You win with great players. You put asses in the seats with stars. We were terrible 2 seasons ago, but people went to see Rossiter. We need a guy that can hustle and beat out not only peer schools, but at times schools a level above us.
Plays an up-tempo style of play. Debated for years on this board, enough said.
At one time or another has been part of a big time, high level program. Hewitt recruited Kerry Kittles and Tim Thomas at Villanova. Fran was at ND for 10 years. Deane was at Michigan St. Guys that understand the big-time because they have been there and aren’t intimidated by it. No were not going to be big-time, but our greatest moments have been when we challenged and sometimes have beaten the big-time.
The ability to understand what it is like to coach at a Catholic school-Can’t minimize this. Hopefully it is someone that is either Catholic, or has coached at a Catholic school. It’s a different ball of wax than a state school or a private school with no religious affiliation. He has to understand how to handle the community that he is working in.
He need to be married, with a young family-I know this sounds so secondary, but we don’t need a guy who is out chasing women on the town. A married guy hopefully shows stability. A young family keeps you on your feet, energized, active, and certainly not content. Fran and Hewitt both put their families right in the community, at the schools and places of business.
A guy that demands immediate respect from all-players, admin, fans. Fran used to blow up constantly. I LOVED every instance he did it. Heck, he should be a hot-head. If we have another instance like we had with Rahk and Burdine, I want a guy that puts the fear of God in them. For the players a guy that is a combination of a father figure/cool uncle/mentor. A guy you not only don’t want to disappoint, but a guy you want to do anything you can to please as a player. The Siena basketball coach is a celebrity in this area; he represents the school, probably more than any other person on the payroll. He can’t be a private guy. Of course he is entitled to private time with family, etc, but essentially on the job 365 days a year in one way, shape or form. Fran and Hewitt are big guys who have a presence when they come into a room.
