I know all Siena fans have to be exhausted after our team inched by Marist tonight. Marist's McCann Center has always been a "House of Horrors" for the Saints. Marist always draws a crowd when they play the Saints and it is ALWAYS a tough game to get the "W". Remember the year Kyle Downey played so well down there?
I went back 14 years, so that takes the "coach" talk out of it and just leaves it as program vs. program. Over that time at Marist, Siena has 7 wins ( 2 of them in OT) and 7 losses. So, looking back at it, now that it is over, Siena has rarely, and I mean rarely hammered the Red Foxes there, even with our very best teams. In 14 years, Siena has only had one double digit win at the McCann Center. So, in that context, it is a NICE SEVEN POINT WIN with the Saints playing well in crunch time. A win is a win is a win - on to Monmouth! Go Saints!
Here it is, year by year AT THE MCCANN CENTER:
2-11-17 WON 84-77 2-7-16 lost 73-79 1-18-15 WON 66-64 2-14-14 lost 64-65 1-27-13 WON 79-75 2-23-12 lost 52-61 1-14-11 WON 66-59 1-30-10 WON 79-60 1-15-09 WON in OT 91-85 2-8-08 WON in OT 97-88 2-24-07 lost 61-78 1-28-06 lost 75-82 1-7-05 lost 66-77 12-4-03 lost 65-67

What isn't reflected here are the Marist years of having really good talent like Jared Jordan, Will Whittington and Ryan Stilphen. Those were 2003 through 2007 I believe.

Is that like the Siena years of having perhaps it's greatest team ever? That would be 2008,9 & 10. The pendulum swings both ways.

I don't see what the issue here. They won the game, it was a good win on the road. Monmouth barely squeaked by manhattan too. Good teams pull these games out and Siena did. What I am hoping for is consistency going forward. If that happens then some of the more lofty goals can be reached.

I spent some time last night in the Red Fox’s den discussing our rivalry with several of their die hard fans. It has been a long difficult road since Jordan’s and Whittington’s departure. They indicated that the first half last night was the best basketball the team has played all year. Yet the game was tied which I thought boded well for us to walk away with a W. They seem to like this new coach and are willing to give him more time to see what they have. I expected a dog fight last night as Marist always “gets up” for games against us on their home court and that was what we got. It was a great game to be at as the atmosphere at McCann’s is always electric including their outstanding band that supports their team regardless of how good/bad the team may be. Their band is our IS- never wavering through thick and thin.

Place has at times been a house of horrors. I remember being beaten by a half court prayer. I think even heavily favored Siena teams have lost there. Of recent memory Brett's bad inbounds pass. Further back was a good memory of a Mike Deane team beating a Fox team with Rik Smits. Following a game I didn't attend in the John Griffin days there was a post game brawl. I will never forget a few years ago after a Siena loss the Marist students celebrating across campus like their team Had won the NCAA tournament. Series at least on the Marist side has been every bit a rivalry more than UA/Siena series.

Marist was the #1 seed that year (in Bridgeport). I thought Siena lost to Marist twice that year in OT, with the game at Marist something like high 80's to 90's. Of course Siena ended up losing to Niagara in the finals but Fran got us there three more time to the MAAC Championship games, and we all know the outcome of those 3.

Maker is there for a reason. Marist wanted to make the move to the Patriot league at some point. Their academic standards keep going up too. He's a good coach with a string academic background. He gets a few more years, but I don't see them ever being relevant in the MAAC again.

Ok, so there are two wins for us each season because they have higher academic standards. However, they also have mulitple Master's programs...so they could attract smarter, older, more experienced players...just sayin. I like Maker, I think he is a class guy.
