Well there could be worse times for this to happen. Obviously he won't be going overseas with Brett now.
Best wishes for a quick recovery for Nico. I'm sure he'll be ready for practice in October - hope so anyway.

Let's hear from our medical experts and from those who will blame J P for Nico's knee.

Best wishes for a quick and successful recovery. Surgery for patellar tendonitis (aka jumper's knee) is the last resort after attempts at more conservative. non-invasive treatment options. We can safely assume that icing, rest, physical therapy have all been used and proven less than required leading to the surgical recommendation. The surgical success rate is in the 60-80% range and can take between 6 and 12 months for a recovery to levels close to those prior to the injury. These are not my opinions, just medical fact. I certainly hope that Nico's injury is less serious and only a very small section of tendon requires removal and reconstitution, leading to a speedy recovery more in line with what he is expecting. There is no blame associated with a condition like this so I'm going to have to disappoint Hank and not suggest that it is anyone's fault. We all know Nico gives 120% on every possession so an injury like this can happen - medicine today does not include early career stress testing of key muscular/skeletal components to alert athletes that this may occur in their specific cases when they push themselves to the undefined limits of their own bodies.
We best hope that Kadeem is ready to step in and carry the load to whatever extent is required.

If he's been battling this for awhile, why not have this surgery in late March?? Why push it to the last second where it could actually affect the season?

If he's been battling this for awhile, why not have this surgery in late March?? Why push it to the last second where it could actually affect the season? Because surgery is always last option. Probably tried resting it since end of season. Not all patellar tendonitis surgery is the same, and recovery time can vary. Many new techniques out there that is not super invasive. Important thing to remember is this is not a ruptured Pateller tendon, its micro tears. So until he has the surgery ( today) won’t really know.

MP, did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night? :-) Rooms were all taken but I did absorb some of the atmosphere while copping a cup of coffee in the lobby. In all seriousness, I am very familiar with the knee having had three surgeries on my left one. He will most likely undergo laproscopic surgery (three very small circular entries) to allow removal of the damaged tissue - a trimming of the affected area which should then regenerate itself. He may have some meniscus damage which they should look for while in there and have that trimmed, etc. - trimming off any shredded margins significantly reduces the chances for additional tearing - hopefully this will be non-existent or minimal as the meniscus does not regenerate itself. Tony is correct (he may have gotten the last room at the HI before I got there) - surgery is the absolute last option. I would guess Nico has been getting help for the knee once he made the severity of it known to Hammer, et al.

while certainly not Patsos's fault. He does appear to be a tad on the snake-bitten side. End of the day... $300,000+ ... its times like this when you really must earn it.

One of my sons had MPFL surgery a year and half ago. MPFL is to prevent future patella dislocations. He had the surgery in October and was fully cleared to resume all activities in Jan. It sounds to me like my son's surgery was more extensive than the surgery Nico is having and although we had rehab for him, 2-3 one hour sessions per week, it was nothing compared to what Nico will have available to him. Thus, I expect Nico will be fine in the time frame they've given.
Fingers crossed!
