Nice- Really rooting for JO. Sounds like a good kid who's been through a lot. And love to see the best local kids stay near home. Keep it up Javion! You also hope it makes Silas get better. I noticed he is playing REALLY hard in practice

Practice and pick up is one thing. Games are another.
JO showed me more with his interior D last year than I was expecting, but he also showed me less than expected on his offense around the basket. Still, it was all enough to think he can be a solid big in this league and eventually be the defensive heir to Silas...as long as he gets his heart in it and goes out and gets boards.
I question whether or not it's this year. Silas a senior and is a notorious slow starter. He's horrible every preseason. It's a little too early to be writing him off for the year. This time last year he wasn't going to play at all either. The year before, people were writing him off when he fouled out of the exhibition in like 5 mins. He always does this. Then the season comes along and he's the guy who comes in and gets 4 boards and 3 blocks in 5 minutes and the coach is all like "hmmm, well that was nice".
If JO is truly better than him, then AWESOME. He makes less mistakes. I am absolutely rooting for him because of that. But this thing is a marathon, not a sprint.
Full practices haven't even started yet. It's so early. And saying the freshman won't play as much cause they're making frosh mistakes in September is a bit premature as well.
Things change real fast once the games start. I mean, remember when Kyle Griffin was the starting PG or when Brett Bisping and Ryan Oliver were just an afterthought?
Nov. 14th. That's when we'll start to find out just how improved everyone really is.

Silas wasnt much more than a break even last year. He is near invisible on the offensive end and when he gets fouled he misses more than he makes at the FT line. I get that he can block shots and some of them are quite impressive but how many times has he blocked the ball out of bounds? fouled the shooter? If JO had been any better prepared last year he wouldve eaten a ton of Silas minutes. Throw in Brandwijk this year and if we see little improvement from Silas we could see him down around 10 minutes or less a game.

hes also got a little Hymes in him. Did he eat him or is it like a Total Recall type thing? Throws an outlet pass away, gets stripped, puts up a few shots that damage the backboard. Throw in Brandwijk this year and if we see little improvement from Silas we could see him down around 10 minutes or less a game. The difference between JO and Silas is the rebounding. Over Silas' 16.8 mins per game, JO would get 2 less rebounds per game the way he played last year. That's a big big gap for playing less than half of a game... Can't give up that much rebounding. That's the determining factor in my mind. If JO closes that huge rebounding gap and finishes at the rim more respectably, he should absolutely play over Silas. I just want to know whether those 2 issues have been fixed.... If Brandwijk or a guard comes in and is putting points up on the board, Jimmy is going to want to shift lineups anyway. I'm not exactly sure how many minutes either of these two will end up getting. They are certainly battling each other for the same time though.

Per a Mark Singelais tweet: JO is currently the starting center per Jimmy. It bodes well for the future that JO is improving. Still, we went through this same thing last year. Very curious to see how this all works out over the course of the season between WB, JO, and Silas. "We" didn't go through anything last year. JO went through a very bad ankle injury (not the same one that was hurt in H.S. thankfully) and the loss of his mother. I'm not sure he every fully recovered from either last season. In a recent interview he acknowledged he did not play up to his potential last season, and for the reasons already stated, it's easy to see why. Throw out what you saw last season. The guy who had actually won the starting job the first time around is back. And with some experience to boot. I'm confident he'll be so much an upgrade at the 5 that all debate on that note will end.

If 'we'/Jimmy choose to play with a 5 at all I'm sure the position will be improved from last year. Remember that whole issue about not being able to score with the big lineup that we went through last year? That issue is still there. If the Saints want to eclipse this magic 70 ppg number they can't be playing with all these guys who aren't threats to shoot jumpers. That plays a big factor into the center position debate.

I know what you meant. My point is the JO we saw last season was a compromised version for the reasons already stated. I think we'll see what you've been looking for from him this time around. For Patsos to have already have named him the starter already is very telling. Of course, the flip side of that is Patsos changes his mind as often as he changes his underwear.

Silas is playing so damn hard and he is just a good kid you can’t help but root for him. But he looks to still be a liability on offense, he turns the ball over too much and his silly fouls, he fouled out 10 times in 16 min a game of action hurts the offense. And in practice he looks like the same Imoh. JO did some good work on his body in off season he looks much stronger this year, and it shows in practice where he is dominating the backboard, and make no mistake about it practice is where you "earn" playing time. I expect Brett to get a lot of time at the 5 this year also, not sure WB is ready to play the 5, like most freshmen big men he has to learn to play Defense. And like I’ve said WB is good, real good but he is still a freshmen and you can count on one hand "impact" freshmen 6’8” or taller in the MAAC over last 20 years- I expect a freshmen year out of WB similar to Rossiter or OD, where we knew they would be good—but just wasn’t there yet
