I don't know where you radicals stand on the MMA, but NY is the only remaining state to ban the sport. A bill to legalize has been held up in committee (big surprise). The TU claims that it should be held up to a vote and then voted down due to brutality.
In the 25 years since its rise to popularity, I have never seen this issue come up as a proposition. I also would wager that the TU editors have never seen an event like this or have studied the details of the sport. For those of you that do not know, the MMA combines boxing skills with other disciplines such as jujitsu and wrestling. Not only is the sport very exciting to watch, it also is safer in my mind. There are fewer rounds, and unlike boxing's 3 knockdown rule in the MMA once the fighter is rendered defenseless the fight is over. There is little chance for corruption in the decision process (unlike boxing). The sport also has gender equity. If it was legalized in addition to the economic benefits I believe it would be another incentive for kids to develop healthy bodies through MMA clubs and kickboxing, etc. NY is not so special that it sees something the other states don't. It's on TV every week anyway, so it is not like it is shielding its citizens from watching brutality-- it's only shielding itself from the revenue and other benefits. It's time to submit and legalize the MMA.
