The need to centralize evaluations makes sense given the various terms used by the newly formed state tea party organizations. Had they all used the common Tea Party moniker it is likely that criteria would be developed and consistently applied as it is for either the D's or the R's. Very troubling charge that Levin targeted groups opposing him. If this is true, he should be ousted and possibly prosecuted (not sure if any actual laws were broken). This is one of the big downsides to multi-term representatives, they see themselves as untouchable and better than the rest of us. You want the experience but not the ego growth.

MP - shades of blame the victim in your comment but at least a tacit acknowledgement of wrongdoing. I'll take it ;-)
The bottom line is that although some progressive groups got extra scrutiny, they all eventually received their tax exempt status. Many of the TEAs are still waiting. I'm sure the progressive groups didn't all use the same moniker. This is so clearly an abuse of power and between Levin and Cummings it is clear why Dems don't want this investigated. There are rules about congress talking directly to agency people (maybe just regulatory, but I'm not sure).
At this point, anyone with integrity in Congress would be up in arms - regardless of the party. The fact that the Dems are forming a Blue Line is detrimental to the republic.

They need to eliminate all these type of organizations from the tax code - liberal, moderate or conservative ... Basically they all are touting a political agenda under the guise of "education" and getting subsidized by taxpayers ... Political contributions to political organizations/parties give no tax benefits
