It should not come as a surprise that there are people out there that will take advantage of any system - that's the bad side of human behavior. I am certain there are examples of deserving people that don't get the services they might really need due to stumbling blocks in the "system" or paperwork problems. Do you think the whole system should be junked because of the relatively few abusers? What was your purpose in posting the link? I think the inclusion of "food stamp" in the characterization of the beach bum conveys a negative view of that system on its own merits, JMHO!

The rich abuse some of. these systems too --- their greed knows no bounds. Safe to say it's human nature. Obviously, the rich have means to do it in more creative ways, but we should do what we can to prevent tax-payer money from being diverted by illegal means by whomever does it. I will say that we have an obligation to help the truly needy & hungry. By that, there will be abuse of that and some of that we just have to endure. However, doing other things to encourage self-improvement will reduce the use of tax-payer money to this type of aid and benefit the recipients in general. I want to start by reducing the debt/deficit by identifying general waste & unnecessary bureaucracy in the govt. Left alone, this will end up hurting our children in years to come in many ways.

Bringing in the rich as potential abusers triggered this gem in the news last week. The Senate (US) has finally agreed on an extension of unemployment benefits for an additional five months - I don't have a problem with that. The genius's in the Senate also place a cap on who could collect the additional benefits (I think this limit is only on the extension but I may be wrong on that) - those who had been earning over $1 MILLION can't get it!!!!!!!!!!!! The idea that people making that much money would even apply blows my mind. The maximum benefit has to be coffee money to those folks. I would have thought there would have been much lower limits already in place - e.g., $500,000 would even be a stretch for me - people making that much money would most certainly have a nice nest egg somewhere and could "tough" it out if they were all of a sudden unemployed. I wonder if receipt of a golden parachute or buyout obviates applying for unemployment compensation?
