As much as Patsos wants to will the team to the next level, effort is only half the equation. Talent is the other half. And he must upgrade the talent. It was striking how different the athletes of Manhattan and Iona look compared to Siena's in terms of athleticism and build. Siena is the most dunk challenged division 1 team I've ever seen outside of the Ivy League. And they need shooters.
They're getting there. Patsos is bringing in what they need. Wolfe is going to be something special once he packs on about 30 pounds of muscle. Long and Paige have college ready bodies. If they get Brandwijk, that's a recruiting class of athletic shooters - one for the backcourt and one up front. Just what the team needs.
I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but I shake my head at the thought of Mitch on the recruiting trail. He saw the players brought in under Fran. He knew firsthand what kind of talent was needed to win big. And he was set up to be able to get such talent to the mid-major power he inherited. How could he have veered so far off course? That's not a rhetorical question. Someone please explain it to me.

He was not all that personable similar to the dead horse. I am damn sure he was getting bad mouthed on the recruiting trail and then... backed up all that negative talk on the court with the system and style of play he implemented. He exposed himself as being inflexible and a complete inability to adjust in-game. His slow plodding pound it in style deterred any real gifted athletes from seriously looking at Siena under his tenure. It spiraled downhill to the point hitting his C and D list recruits ... and beyond. Ive never seen a coach at any level so out of touch with their own ability to land a recruit. Dude seriously had absolutely no clue where he stood on the recruiting trail. i was pissed off when his name was mentioned for the job and absolutely disgusted when this hire took place. As I am not an alum its far easier for me to be STILL pissed off at the school

Mitch performed about the same as he did at FF. He inheritead a good team and ran that program into the ground , since he can't recruit.
Fran pimped Mitch to the gullible and pimp prone Siena ADM ( two guys who know the value of kissing ass) and voila! Mitch became the "man".
Four years later everyone at Siena is paying for that fatal flaw in Siena's ADM. No apologies ( or even lessons learned by the Siena ADM) Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Siena needs a committee of basketball experts to control teh hiring of new men's basketball coaches.
The A10 saw what happened and I'm sure this was one of several reasons that Davidson got the invite over Siena.
There is only a small window of opportunity for Siena to get the invite after St Louis and/or Dayton move to the Big East. After that it's MAAC "no-TV" heaven.
That's why I was pissed ( apparently no one else cares ) when Jimmy gave a scholarship to Cam Gottfried. I think Cam is probably a great kid , but so are a lot of other kids with minimal talent. Siena needs to win big next year to preserve are fading memory as an elite mid-major.

Its the coaching fraternity ... his hands were tied in recommending Mitch for the job. It was up to Siena front office to sniff the stink out. No EFFING WAY do you hire a coach who was fired at another in-conference school ... I don't give a shite why they were fired. DONT DO IT. Re Gottfried: he will have to earn that scholarship. Make no mistake... it wont be just handed to him in year two. He will be playing and paying his own way year one. That doesn't hurt Siena at all.

Jimmy knows what he's doing. We think we know the story on the scholarship "deal", but JP is not giving anything away. I have hopes we have a real shooter in Cam, JP obviously sees something in this kid and they have seen him a lot more than any of us.

Love the endorsement/free press from Johnny Holliday, MD radio sportscaster.
"Jimmy Can coach!! He showed it as one of Gary Williams assistants at Maryland…he showed it again at Loyola…and he will get the job done at Siena. Like Jimmy says, if the players follow his lead, believe in what he’s doing, fight to the end the way Jimmy did as a player, all will be well. Jimmy Patsos is one of the good guys in college coaching!"

Regarding talent. Was watching maac semi finals Sunday, wish Siena was there. Switched between UA, VT and the maac. Wife watching with me. Long story short she commented on, difference in style and athletic ability, slowness of game. Especially VT . Leagues are so different I'm ability at end of season.
