Governor Cuomo is now stumping for free college education for incarcerated prisoners in NYS! I hope CellarRat, Glen, th24 and other vocal conservatives are sitting down when reading this. Cuomo's idea is totally asinine - kindest I can be on-line. This idea fails the smell test on so many levels. Kids/families that haven't broken the law are forced to pay/go into long term debt for a college education while convicted felons get it for free to "better their lives" when they get out! Give me a break. The myth of any college education as a springboard to a good job has been exposed. So many college graduates, with unblemished resumes, find themselves unable to get those "promised" jobs at good wages. Increasing the population of people seeking the few jobs that are out there with rehabbed felons with a degree from SingSing U is nuts! Putting the burden of the cost for this insane idea on the taxpayer is beyond the pale, doing it in a state with the highest overall tax rates defies credibility - but then, our politicians have long ago discarded the need for or pretense of credibility in what they do AFTER GETTING ELECTED. If we feel we must prepare inmates to reenter the law abiding world, train them in areas that we currently can't find enough workers - the service industry comes to mind as a prime example. Let them enter at the minimum wage - they come out free and clear of debt in most cases. Train them to be bus boys, short order cooks, welders, auto mechanics, garbage collectors, hospital health aids, cleaners. Discuss!!!!

I could not agree more. This has me not just shaking my head, but banging it against the wall.

I'm not surprised- but of course we are talking about a guy won't get behind " Jessica's Law". And for the life of me...I don't understand that !

MP, I've seen it, other than the headlines I could not get myself to read any further for health reasons! Lol.
It seems like it NEVER stops. Without knowing more, I would agree with your comments. Many of these felons, I would guess did not take advantage of the free public school system, what makes Cuomo think they will take advantage of this. That really isn't relevant or the point, just saying...
I'm glad we can agree on something.

Philosophically it comes down to what's the purpose of prison? Is it to rehabilitate or to punish?
There have to be studies out there showing the recidivism rate for those who took advantage of degrees in prison vs not. It definitely should not be on the taxpayer dime though. Prisoners definitely have time on their hands and they may as well use it productively but we shouldn't have to cover the upcharge.
