You don't play a balanced schedule in the Big 10. The reason Iowa missed the NCAAs last year was not because of the non-conference. They went 9-9 in the Big Ten when the four teams they didn't have to play twice were Michigan, Michigan St, Ohio St, and Illinois. That is like going 7-11 with a balanced schedule. This year the four teams they don't play twice are Indiana, Nebraska, Penn St, and Purdue. Going 9-9 this year would be more like 11-7 with a balanced schedule so they will be a lock for the NCAAs at .500 or better in conference and even have a shot at 8-10.

They went 9-9 without playing the strong teams twice, plus a weak OOC. They had a horrible RPI and SOS. Illinois finished behind them in the Big Ten and made the tourney because they played a tougher schedule. And as you said, they went 9-9 in conference last year without playing the top teams twice. They won't win 9 league games this year.

He did the same thing last year and went NIT because of it. He's looking for easy wins and it's costing them in the long run. Why schedule up in the ooc when your conference games are some of the toughest in the country Because the committee considers it? Ask Seth Greenberg why he's announcing instead of coaching. When you are mid pack or lower in a top league, you have to play a strong OOC or you won't make the tourney.

Iowa has one of the weakest OOC schedules of any BCS team. UNC-Wilm, Omaha, Maryland Eastern Shore, Abilene Christian, Penn, Xavier, Drake, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Arkansas Pine Bluff. They will have a horrible RPI and SOS, again. As a mid pack Big Ten team, any conference struggles and they are out of NCAA tourney consideration. My prediction- no NCAA's and Fran is shown the door. Iowa also plays Notre Dame in the ACC Big Ten Challenge, and you left out Iowa State (their only away non-conference game, amazingly). But I'm sure both omissions were honest mistakes, and not intentionally left out to reinforce a point.

sometimes being a college fan isn't enough. You have to do research.

I'll have to check again. If that's the case, those games will be a huge help to the SOS and RPI.
