After reading this article, it's making me think: are people like Wells and Urgo being interviewed for the Associate Head Coach position because the administration is trying to put a more thoughtfully considered heir apparent in place?

It's possible especially well someone like Wells but the head coach should have the final say on his staff. Of course they could be interviewing people as "suggestions" to him.

Siena can cure its coaching ills by changing the way they hire coaches. Instead of leaving it up to just D'Arg and Mullen, use an internal committee. With a few voices involved in the process providing multiple viewpoints, I feel it's less likely a mistake is made. For example had I been involved, I would have pointed out that coaches rarely change the way they operate and then showed them what Mitch did at Fairfield. The succession of in house assistants at Butler, Xavier, and VCU, etc. all were young up and comers who only knew their respective school's way of doing things and would continue it. With his history, Siena should have see foreseen why Mitch wouldn't fit that mold, as I did when I wrote my anti-Mitch diatribe 3 years ago on this board. There is a reason fired mid-major coaches rarely get a second chance.
I would have also been wary of untested assistants that hadn't at least been head coaches in Div. 2 or 3 somewhere. You look at someone like Lanier, and on paper he should have been a superstar with his recruiting ability and who he learned the ropes from. But he's a lesson learned that a candidate must have been a successful head coach somewhere first. Current candidate Rhoades can say that, so that's why I am comfortable with him being a candidate even though he's an assistant.

My exact feeling why an astute basketball committee should be putting their collective minds together to come up with a successful hire. I don't blame D'Arg for the Lanier(hand picked by Fr. Toale) and Mitch(player loyalty pick) hires. Due diligence was done in the Hewitt and McCaffrey selections.
