Are the press conferences and intro normally open to the public?

I'm glad they got it done. As others have said, it's a total unknown how he'll be as a Head Coach but I'm optimistic that this transition away from Carm is an indication that the administration knows what Basketball can do for the school. I'm not a Syracuse fan at all to be honest but McNamara seems like a classy guy and has paid his dues as an assistant coach. In this NIL era I think McNamara is a worthwhile risk due to his name recognition locally and also his connection to the currently SU exiled Weitsman.

Let’s be honest every coach at our level comes with a certain element of risk, even those with headcoaching experience. We’ve seen it with Mitch, Patsos - failures, Jamion - left Siena high and dry, and he subsequently flamed out at GW. We’ve also had our share of assistants fail. For every Fran and Paul there are multiple failures, far too many! I like GMaac (a lot). He’s young, ambitious, has a ton of P5 (playing/coaching) experience, he moves the needle, he has name recognition, he’ll energize the fanbase and he has the potential to help drive NIL funding. The other names floated with GMaac were pretty lackluster and not unlike when JC was hired, basically about what I expected. I think we did pretty well here considering. For the first time in a long time I’m actually looking forward to a season.

I agree there weren't a lot of current Head Coaches where there would be reciprocal interest. Gallo was probably the safest prospect out of sitting HC's but it's hard to believe he would leave Merrimack. Fee and Copeland probably would have taken the job but they're both largely unproven as HC's. If we were talking in 2013, I would personally put Fee over McNamara as a candidate but there's so much yet to be learned from this NIL era so I understand why McNamara is the choice. I definitely think McNamara has the most potential out of any other assistant bandied about.

Gerry's long tenure as an assistant at one school makes me think of a highly successful head coach who has a similar background - Tommy Lloyd of Arizona. Let's hope GMac can do for Siena what Lloyd has done for the Wildcats (notwithstanding that they lost last night).

Most of my golf buddies are Siena alums or Syracuse fans so they will be on board with joining me at the games. After mid season their interest waned understandably.

Great hire. Now you'll appreciate SU and how the level of talent GMAC will bring in, it will lead to immediate results and wins.

I definitely think McNamara has the most potential out of any other assistant bandied about. Every coach (first time or veteran) has some risk. Iona was great with Tim Cluess. Marist was terrible with Mike Maker both were previously great coaches outside of D1. Fran was no lock when we hired him. He was called .500 Fran when he got here. Yes he had taken two teams to the NCAA tournament (Lehigh and UNCG) but his overall record was 139-126. Patsos record at Loyola was very similar to Fran’s pre Siena. I know some want to debate that because in hindsight one was great here and the other struggled but the numbers say they were very similar. Rob Lanier and Paul Hewitt had almost the same resume on paper. Rob might have even been stronger. One worked out great and one did not (at Siena at least) Mitch had the least upside and most red flags on paper. That was the worst hire. There’s a lot to like about GMAC. Sure some questions too but here’s hoping he has some very good answers to them. IT IS A GREAT DAY TO BE A SAINT!
