I never knew this:
The three-point line was first tested at the collegiate level in 1945, with a 21-foot line, in a game between Columbia and Fordham, but it was not kept as a rule. There was another one-game experiment in 1958, this time with a 23-foot line, in a game between St. Francis (NY) and Siena. In 1961, Boston University and Dartmouth played one game with an experimental rule that counted all field goals as three points.[2] In 1962, the St. Francis (NY) head coach, Daniel Lynch, once again made the suggestion of a 3pt line to the New York Basketball Writers Association.[3]

Great article! On a side note, my daughter went to Springfield College as a P.E. and Health major. I always enjoyed their campus. She received a good education there.

More support for the fact that the game was better in the 80s. Look at those percentages. I realize the distance is longer now but with the rushed shot clock and the Dilution of d1 talent you will never see those percentages again.

Siena lost both games (82-66 at St. Francis, and 65-48 in Albany); don't know which game was the 3-point line experiment, but maybe that first one given the number of points scored.

Didn't know that your wife is from that area. Where did she go to high school? I lived in Springfield for seven years (1953-60) and went to Cathedral High School my freshman and sophomore years before moving to Albany. The article mentions Vinnie DelNegro, who also went to Cathedral, as did Angelo Bertelli, Nick Buoniconti, Joe Scibelli and Chris Capuano. Notice anything they might have in common? My dad and I used to go to a lot of Springfield College football games because the football coach, Ted Dunn, was a neighbor and a good friend of my dad's.
