I had the same reaction to this as when Mike Montgomery left Stanford for the NBA. Why leave great college jobs to deal with player egos?

John has always exhibited class and is a true basketball guru. As Siena fans he treated us to outstanding coaching, most of which were defeats for our beloved Saints.

I had the same reaction to this as when Mike Montgomery left Stanford for the NBA. Why leave great college jobs to deal with player egos? Simple. They have egos too. They think they can achieve success at the next level but will never know if they don't try. He can give this a shot for a couple of years, it doesn't work? He's satisfied an itch and made a lot more retirement money. What's not to like.

Shocked by this move. He’s a great coach, but he lll realize very early that the NBA is a players league, not a coaches league like the NCAA. Cavs are a bunch of young kids, but are years away from being a playoff team. Hope he got a lot of money, because I’m not sure how attractive a 71 yo, out of work HC plays in the NCAA in 2025. Pitino and Calipari both left great college jobs to try the NBA, but after failing came back in their 40’s. Maybe he looks at it as his last job and why not try to turn around an NBA team before I retire? Wish him luck! He’s a class act and a great coach.

He should have waited until after the draft lottery.

I’d figure, at this point in his life why would he want to put himself through the possible torture of NBA players not necessarily being as receptive (egos) to his coaching. But I think I read he’s getting $5 per year??? Maybe he just wanted to prove to himself that he could do it. In sandy case I like the guy and hope he succeeds.

I suspect that there are several zeroes missing from that $5 reference, IS. Like about six of them. He's supposedly signing a five year contract, so may be that's where the "5" comes from, but there's no chance that he's coaching for $5 a year. He's not that nice of a guy!

I forgot the “M” after the $5.
