It's that time of year where you start to get some player profile pieces in the local rags. Just ran across two of them and don't think I saw them shared elsewhere on this site: Bayer A Solid FitRatliff Gets a Change of SceneryThe one tidbit I learned is that Jimmy Ratliff's dad played at Ohio State in the early 90's.

The one tidbit I learned is that Ratliff was originally recruited by Carmen Maciariello for George Washington. Why the hell did he choose a division 2 school over them?

Difference between recruited and offered. Ratliff was recruited late in his prep year by the likes of Marshall, GW, USC Upstate, UNC Greensboro, etc. To my knowledge he didn’t get offers from those programs other than Upstate, but North Alabama was about to go up to D1 (they will be D1 this year).

Maybe Carm was just looking at him vs actually offering him .... Never saw mention of an official offer from GW anywhere.

Fair enough. But then the question becomes if that's case that Carm ultimately judged he wasn't good enough to play for him before, why the change of heart now?

Any number of reasons that could include: Carm wanted to offer him but other coaches on the GW staff didn’t. Carm didn’t think he was an A10 player but he was a MAAC player (especially without a guaranteed scholarship) Ratliff fit the Siena system better than the GW system. Ratliff improved over the last year and is a more desirable prospect now than he was then.

I don't know see how anyone at Siena could have observed any potential improvement last year. I guess we'll see if GW missed out, or their initial conclusion was correct.

I would assume that we saw him work out before offering him. I would think one could evaluate those potential improvements there.

I think we forget that some young people mature faster than others. Wasn't it Michael Jorden who didnt make his high school Basketball team until he was a Junior. Rossiter was a late mature and he was high major player by the time he graduated. I think a good coach has to take a lot of things into consideration such a potential and desire.

That story is so blown out of proportion, Jordan didn't make his varsity team as a sophomore so he played JV which is perfectly normal.

You are right Scott. I meant to say varsity. But I will wager there were some sophomores who made it, but never became as outstanding as Michael. I was simply trying to say that you can't judge players in their early years.

I just like the fact that an A10 team/coach was even interested in him in the first place (regardless of reason(s)). They wouldn’t waste there time if they didn’t see something positive. I’m happy he chose Siena and I haven’t even seen him play a game yet. So far none of the coaches have given me any indication that they don’t know what they’re doing, so I’m trusting their judgement.
