Maybe, I'll repost this here. Yeah....about that pipe...I don't think there is much data analysis going on....just MHO. Over JP's 5 years here, I've come to believe that this is the case. He coaches toughness, hustle, and emotion. If he understood the analytical side better and took it more seriously, his comments and strategies would reflect that. I don't think he pays much attention to the numbers of either Siena or its opponents. I'm not sure he looks at it from that perspective much. The book on him has always been that he focuses less on the 'scout' than on perfecting his own system...which has long been 'attack the paint, draw fouls, and crash for offensive boards'...though on defense...it gets a lot more grey with him. Maybe that's why his defenses have usually lagged behind his offenses. Jimmy's average Kenpoms (14 years): Offense = 175th2pt FG% Offense = 217th 3pt FG% Offense = 174th 3pt Attempt % = 245th Offensive Rebounding % = 67th Offensive FT rate = 110th Offensive Assist % = 192 Offensive TO% = 217 PPS average = 1.247 Offensively, you like how he gets to the rim and rebounds but, based on the numbers, the offense hasn't created a lot of high% looks because the 2pt FG% sucks and the assist rate isn't that great. We see this all the time. And because the offense isn't creating good looks it leads to a lot of turnovers. The #'s over the 14 years reflect all this. While, in some years with good talent he has managed higher, Jimmy's overall PPS is just 1.247...that's not very good. Tim Cluess' teams average 1.334 Points per shot attempt. If that was the only stat that mattered, Jimmy would lose to Cluess by 4 or 5 points every game on that stat alone. The numbers for Jimmy's career show what we see in exaggerated fashion in this year's games with less depth of elite talent. He's a whole lot of average. Defense = 215thDefensive Rebounding % = 240th Defensive TO% = 198th Fouling = 282nd 2pt D = 135th 3pt D = 139th Opponent Assist % = 93rd On defense, his teams generally suck on the defensive boards as they're often scattered in man D. They do ok defending FG% wise but at the PPS level they blow overall because they're always fouling a TON and that's how you maximize PPS. As a result, they negate most of the rest of their positive efforts. Also, he's way overrated in his ability to force turnovers. Between his poor offensive TO% and his poor defensive TO%...he's been losing the turnover margin battle for years. He may make up for some of the possession battle when his rebounding is elite but it's not enough to separate him much from the mean. A whole lot of blah on D. While there are some things you could like about Jimmy, his other deficiencies and lack of attention to detail negate a lot of the good things that he does do.

yes, add up those numbers...............JP stinks..................and I will add SOME here take too much stock in toughness, hustle & emotion..........Gdamit, every single athlete in whatever sport should be doing that and displaying that regularly........it isn't something a coach can or should be falling back on..........been involved in mid-level to HS sports for a very long time, and I have yet to witness any teams associated, with that didn't display any of those traits, the kids that didn't have that, never made it very far as the level of comp went up or never got off the bench...........most other teams Siena plays exude the same toughness, hustle & emotion, so your left with what...................those things are emphasized for sure, but not something a coach would map out a plan for, and certainly not relying on just those to win games, honestly..........

add this up
Coach Patsos played in the same gym as Tom Hoover, John Thompson, Jr. and 'Monk Malloy at carroll hs on n capitol st. then the good lord sent him to catholic univ to play for the legendary Coach Jack Bruen. he coached at archbishop carroll, against the likes of Morgan Wotton and Joe Gallager jr. he then went to work for Coach Gary Williams and for 13 years and coached the best players in the country on a daily basis - jimmy was a hands on guy and gary demanded excellance - and put maybe three dozen players in the pro s. some are in the hall of fame like all the people Ive mentioned. when he took the job with the worst d1 record in the country I got the chance to sit tableside with Mr Auerbach - who at his own cost hired an ambulance to drive him from chevy chase to Rietz backdoor. Red liked to watch jimmy - said he had an uncanny feel and was good for the game. "keep it simple and work hard" was coach Auerbachs' code.
Yes the game has changed and so do people, schools and leagues, but if you are gonna tell the story, tell the whle story

Yes the game has changed and so do people, schools and leagues, but if you are gonna tell the story, tell the whle story Who cares, here’s the abridged version; .466 win pct at Siena and plummeting 70% player loss over first 3 recruiting classes with more defections coming. That’s about all I need to know!

no but I bet dollars to doughnuts you have said many times'LOOK I KNOW BASKETBALL' I ve read your stuff and I m curious about your bona fides It’s a fan message board that generally happens. Let’s get back to the facts like Not doing your job Poor / lazy recruiting Poor player retention A sub 500 win pct Mistreating players Poor coaching decisions Rex’s Peter Principle ceiling was achieved when he abandoned his bartending career.
