The maac doesn't draw in Albany. All it is another Siena home game or two that pumps up attendance. The sessions that don't involve Siena don't draw flies. I'm not complaining that it stays in Albany, makes it easier to attend, but I feel it should be moved year to year. Draw = # of asses in seats. How or why is irrelevant! Correct, giving Siena home court advantage to get asses in the seats is more important than a neutral site.

Don’t be naive ..Without Siena fans the MAAC tournament would be played at home of highest seed. If that’s what you want come out and say it

The 151 is the only one of those that matter -- (if the goal is fans). Siena fans don't travel well. That's why numbers are so bad when its not in Albany. In an effort to be antagonist- you should add—for a program that doesn’t “travel well” as you call it Siena travels better than the other 10 MAAC teams combined. Not sure I have ever gone to away MAAC game without a bunch of Siena fans at game. Since I’ve seen you at away games you know this to be true

I've heard Newark as a possibility, but has anyone been in that city? That place is scary. I saw a Red Bulls game and drove around the city- it's not pleasant.

Ask yourself would Siena take a 6 on the road to 1 home game deal with a maac level school.

Follow the money . . . any host arenas that will put up the cash guarantees (e.g. Springfield) will be in the mix . . . Ticket sales is only one part of the equation . . . TUC & Siena line up enough corporate sponsorships so MAAC won't take a bath . . . college presidents will vote with their pocketbooks

Siena used to be able to fill a bus for away games no problem, now not so easy.

Buffalo, Trenton, Springfield, even Bridgeport don't support it. Been to all those sites and seen it first hand. It didn't draw in Jersey, before Siena's entry into the MAAC, across the river from the Big Apple because those fans will only settle for pro sports. If and when Siena strings 3 or 4 solid years together then you'll see the 40-50K crowds.

Some thoughts on things posted above:
Which is better 4 games with 2,000 fans (1,000 each from schools less than 100 miles away) or 1 game with 5,000 Siena fans and 100 fans from any school not named Marist or Manhattan and 3 games with 200 fans? What happens to the whole tournament if Siena loses that game?
MAAC presidents have to pay for a lot of hotel rooms in Albany that they might not have to pay for in Newark.
DD, what the hell are you doing driving around Newark at night? NY Penn Station under MSG is 14 minutes away from Newark via NJ Transit. Hoboken is a pretty cool place to hang out as are parts of Jersey City both on PATH trains from Newark.
Neutral Court... the way a tournament should be played.

Trust me, I was not just driving around at night. I'm willing to give Newark another chance- I agree that having the PATH and MSG trains right there is nice.

Everyone makes good points. The reality seems to be that the MAAC isn't popular enough on its own to do a true neutral site tourney. The MAAC isn't the ACC or Big East...or even the A10. The MAAC has much more in common with the AE then the big boys. The arenas have seen the numbers when the tourney moves out of Albany. I think the MAAC would be hard pressed to get the financial guarantees they want anywhere else. Is it unfair for Siena to have home games? Yup. Does a single site tourney anywhere else make fiscal sense? Probably not. Personally, I wouldn't mind doing away with the single site format. The quality internet feeds today negate the need for a single site to televise the tourney. I believe that was a big reason to have a single site. Play the games at the higher seeds place and put it all on E3. It would save the conference a fortune and be much fairer. Sure the MAAC would look small-time if the ESPN game on Monday was at St. Peter's but that is the reality. The MAAC is small-time. Why pretend?

It draws better and gets more cash for the league than anywhere else, which is why the MAAC always brings it back. Refresh our memory which second rate gym did you propose having it in again?

Your beef is with them. Go on their boards and rail on them. If any of them have anybody posting there, besides Iona. Do you get it now?

It's simple mathematics. If one program draws more fans than the next 3 programs, COMBINED, hosts the tournament, the league will make the most money. It's not rocket science.
If the league doesn't care about making money, by all means, move it around the northeast.
