I picked Siena 2nd but that was based on Wright being available.
I always thought/suspected Clareth had this kind of ability in him. It's why I wanted him before I knew we were recruiting him. He was DPOY in HS. He blocked all kinds of shots. He can do whatever he wants off the bounce....still he had that wild streak and was a frosh. I figured that JP could reign him in some like he has with others but I didn't expect it all to come this fast. He is realizing his potential in all facets of the game faster than I thought...and I thought he'd be a ROY candidate.
Wormley is as expected. Oliver is the same old Oliver.
Long is Long...except for the big improvement in fouls and assist ratio...which has proved very important.
After Long, it's Bisping, JO, and Nico who have not only met expectations but exceeded them in certain ways due primarily to realizing potential they already had.
This has made up much of the gap from Wright missing a significant segment of the season.
Also, Siena is shooting 37% from three. The Saints don't attempt much of them but going into the season that was a big question mark..so that's all bonus. Most of the players are shooting to their potential right now.
In general, I'd say just about every player has met or exceeded the expectation I had for them this year. I was not as high on Fisher or Wormley going into this year so them giving what they're giving is not much different than expectation for me. All things considered though, they are doing ok in their roles. Fisher is great at not contributing to the turnover problem.

He is our best defensive guard and it's not close. His vision as a passer is exceptional for a freshman. He is shooting 60% from on 2 point FG's and I would say the difficulty level of those shots is often times fairly high. If he can get himself to a 35-40% 3 point shooter in the future, it's scary how good he can be. Agree with KK, every player has played to or above expectation. It's been said a lot but this team will go as Lavon goes. He is so versatile and when he plays well (especially at home) this team is very tough to beat.

Clareth has played with a positive assist ratio since November.
He has steadily gotten better in just about all facets of the game as the year has gone on and that, perhaps, is the most encouraging thing about him.

More Cunningham! and cowbell! Nice win! Clareth was the man and had some great assists too! Lets get Iona Saturday !!! I know we have seen Nick before but I for one was impressed with his play last night. He handled the ball well when he brought the ball down and didn't look like a walk-on. I personally would love to see a lot more of LaRose minute wise but in the role that Nick played like last night, he did well. This season with Marquis out, after we go past our 7th man, we have a substantial drop-off. Next year, with our expanded roster, a number of players this year will probably play fewer minutes. It is going to be unbelievable competition. Especially in the backcourt.

Wormley and Fisher (and LaRose too for that matter) will be good especially after a full year in the program. Nico is the rare frosh that hits the ground running ala a Kenny Hasbrouck.
A lot of hoops to be played this year but next year is going to be something with four experienced seniors and the most talented player on the team being the "other starter" in Nico. Another year for the current frosh to get better and hopefully take the sophomore jump. You add Smithen, WB and Richard (he should be here it's an injury he was just cleared to play) and potentially a Barnes/Truehart and you have a potential top 50 team.
Jimmy has to keep recruiting though because after JO/Brett/'Quis/Lavon graduate in 2017 we need a strong team around Nico. Imagine that guy as a junior and senior? Need to sign a wing and maybe an athletic PF (this off-season) who as a sophomore will be good enough to have an impact in 2017-18.
Monmouth isn't going anyplace too of course. MAAC is a potential going to be a two bid league next year (and maybe this year if the Hawks are knocked off)

If Nico isn't the MAAC ROY then something's seriously wrong. I've seen just about every team is the league this year and I haven't seen any freshmen that come close to Nico's overall game. The upside for this kid is scary and I'm sure as heck thrilled that he's a Saint! Seems like Kenny may have hit that freshman wall- hope he can work his way through it- we will need him down the stretch.

He's saved our season when Marquis went down. I don't want to short change the other key pieces like Long, Bisping and JO but that outside scoring threat/defender had to be replaced and somehow an 18 year old frosh has done it. If Marquis is even 80% of what he was with Nico and our frontcourt with the TUC being a home we have a legitimate shot to win it (provided we finish with a top 3 seed). What the stats don't show is the energy and swagger Nico has brought to the team. His defense also is probably the best part of his game. He's having as good a freshmen season I've seen at Siena and that includes the great Kenny Hasbrouck and Edwin Ubiles. Great teammate too - picking Nick Cunningham up at the end of the game after Nick scored. Nico is an all-round gem to have. Looking forward to seeing him get even better in the next three years at Siena!

Seems like Kenny may have hit that freshman wall- hope he can work his way through it- we will need him down the stretch. There are a lot of really good frosh in this league right now. He probably has the most upside. People talk of Parker and Portley but they're one dimensional and mostly offensive players. Cobb of FF could have more upside than them as an all-around player...he, Clareth, and Robinson are dog fighting for the MAAC only lead in steals. Seaborn is an all around solid player though maybe not as much of a defensive playmaker. Abdulai Bundu of Quinny could be a future frontcourt star. So there are some good players out there but with Nico at 6-5, and his all-around skills and athleticism, I think he's still the king of the bunch. He is the most consistent player in his impact from game to game on both sides of the ball. I think Cobb and Seaborn are on his heels and of course Parker if he expands his game.

An ever perplexing question.... Not necessarily if it's due to a players effort in practices. Jimmy's been consistent with rewarding players time if they bring the effort in practices (from what I remember from Past two years). Look at the substitutions during games. Go Siena has this right. Would you say a player who obviously isn't awake to play a game at noon should stay in the floor because he brings effort in PRACTICE? In game situations you manage everything you have and dont have to come away with a win. AND please don't say I'm a JP hater. It's to the point sometimes where anyone who questions anything is accused of not being supportive. Last night....Nick ahead of Larose who could have gained some confidence because right now he has none and is looking like he never played basketball in his life was perplexing to me and that was just one example. Sorry that's the way I see it.

On the radio lee was saying he might end up among the most prolific freshmen ever at Siena and is basically a lock for 1500 points.

My unofficial research yields these results: Freshman total points Haddix- 440 Hymes- 415 Brown- 395 Ubiles- 377 McCoy- 359 Knapp- 357 Hasbrouck- 346 Clareth-343 Scoring Average Haddix- 13.8 Hymes- 13.4 Brown- 13.2 Clareth- 13.2 McCoy- 12.4 Hasbrouck- 12.4 Knapp- 12.3 Ubiles- 11.8 If Clareth remains hot, he will have good shot at setting freshman scoring records.

Scoring the ball is just a part of Nico's game. Did you some of the passes he made last night to let guys finish at the rim? His quickness and aggressiveness on defense(he usually draws the toughest assignment). His ability to knife his way to the hoop and finish strong. His desire to mix it up in the paint and fight for the rebound. And lastly, his ability to relish being the guy that steps up at the end of a game and say's "give me the damn ball" and very rarely disappoints. Throw in all the stats that you can find, it's the other stuff that makes him ROY.
