How do you have time to go around and comment on message boards about everything you don't care about? I'm impressed. Its on a Siena message board that I frequently post on...? Why does it matter that he is gay? It doesn't matter that he is gay. It does matter that he has come out as gay, hopefully his coming out will help other athletes have the courage to do the same and stop living a lie like he has been. And by coming out he is going to have to suffer through some horrible things that fans are going to yell at him this year.

Those fans should then be escorted out the door.

Also why do people care that he is gay?

Yea I don't get why this is news worthy. It's newsworthy because someone had the courage to come forward and announce that he's gay, which no other active NCAA D-1 player has done before. Some day it won't be newsworthy anymore, hopefully soon. I hope Derrick and his team have a great season after the Saints thump them! I understand it, I guess I just feel it does not need to be a story.

Unfortunately our society has sustained the environment that does make it a story. The kid deserves all the praise he can get by coming out and, for once in his life be able to shed light on the shadows that I'm sure have haunted him for years. Not easy to be "different" from your 12 or so teammates who you spend the vast majority of your time with. Now he can relax knowing they know who he really is and I'm sure bask in the support his teammates will give him. Fans of opposing teams, always looking for an open sore to poke, will no doubt give him some crap but I will bet his teammates will use that to rally and play even harder. I don't think any of us can truly understand what it must be like to have to hide such a major part of our humanity and how hard it is to maintain that secret.

Why are all you guys so happy about it? Courage? Rescuing a kid from a burning bus is courageous. This is a move for some attention.

This will become a political hot potato the week of the game again! Espn & news networks having their interviews and programs dedicated to the whole thing. And I would not be surprised at all if the game on prime time!

Life's tough enough without having to always be on guard about something that's central to your being. If it were your kid, or your brother, maybe it would be easier to understand what a big step it is for this guy to take. Maybe Derrick's coming out will help other kids, just as Jason Collins's did for Derrick. Let it be.

What's the big deal? The GLT lifestyle is accepted, live your life, no need for announcements, that is just my feeling on the issue. If one of my family members were gay would it be necessary to post it on the front page of the TU for them announce their sexual preference? Nope.
What will he be remembered for, his game or being the first openly gay D1 player?
In this day and age, no big deal.

Easy to say when you don't have a horse in that race! Courage comes in different flavors. The "pull a child out of a burning vehicle" courage is instinctive/reactive with little time for thought. The courage this young man displayed is contemplative with probably many agonizing hours of thought, weighing the pro's and cons before making the decision to come out. The following article is interesting: www.scientificamerican.com/article/homophobes-might-be-hidden-homosexuals/

Essentially calling a poster who disagrees with his point of view a homosexual.

That's the passive agressive part genius. You disagree with his point of view and then you post an implicating link.
