Imagine this tournament...I believe that somebody wanted to start this idea, so here we go...
Tournament of Postseason Tournament Champions
(Assume neutral locations)
First Semifinal Siena (CBI) @ UConn (NCAA)
Second Semifinal Murray State (CIT) @ Minnesota (NIT)
Who wins this imaginary tournament and why?

UCONN hands down. Senior talent, coach with a ceiling in outer space. However, D'arg could charge me 1K to be in the stands for that game and I would cough it up!

The winners of the C's and the winners of the N's should play. It takes care of one OOC game. Play it at a neutral site say like Springfield.

I think we could beat Murray State and Minnesota at the TUC. UConn was playing on another level. But they almost lost to St. Joe's in the round of 64. That is what makes the tournament great or maddening depending on how you look at it. Billy Donovan said it best you could play the NCAA tournament 10 different times and get 10 different winners.

How about a 351-team triple elimination tournament?
(We're not being serious, right?)

How about a 351-team triple elimination tournament? (We're not being serious, right?) It's the offseason. You gotta be creative till next season...

How about shortening the regular season by one week and making it a 148 team tournament. The bottom 40 teams play at home sites for the right to get into the field of 128 March 4 and 5. The round of 128 would also be held at home sites March 7-9. The 64 teams that lose would then be reseeded into the NIT, CBI, and CIT. The 64 teams that win would continue on to be crowned NCAA champion starting March 13-14 as normal. What a field that would be. As long as we are being creative.

The bracket is what drives so many casual fans into watching the tourney. Mess with the bracket too much and you will lose people. The 68 move is about as far as they can go, possibly 72 would work.

Lol brackets have nothing to do with it. Besides, all that would happen is the 64 team bracket would be filled out as normal.

Lol brackets have nothing to do with it. Besides, all that would happen is the 64 team bracket would be filled out as normal. Every team outside the Ivy's already participate in March Madness through their conference tournaments. The NCAA tournament is close to perfect the way it is except for the tweaks put in place to give advantages to the Majors like the POD system. (I'd go back to 64, but that's just me) But, the NCAA is an odd balance of Haves and Have nots. The Haves will allow the Have nots to hang around only as long as they have to. Right not, CBS money, and their desire to drive ratings, is the only thing that is keeping D1 basketball together. The reality is that all of the suit and union activity is likely to change NCAA sports dramatically, and not for the better. If it keeps going the way it seems to be heading, I suspect that the number of D1 programs is going to drop dramatically and it aint gonna be Big East or Big 10 teams out of the picture. What sucks is that it is the student athletes that will suffer should these unions and suits continue moving forward. Sure, Ed OBannon will get paid and the Northwestern kids will get more benefits. But, the mid majors of the world will not be able to afford to compete. (Either the majors will be allowed to offer extra benefits or the required increased benefits will price mid majors out of the market) Say 100 schools are forced to drop D1 athletics, that is like 700 new scholarships per year lost between mens and womens hoops. College basketball is far and away my favorite sport to follow, so I hope I am wrong. But, my guess is that 5 or so years down the road, College hoops is going to look awfully different.

I don't see anything wrong with keeping the conference tournaments I just don't want it to be the only way the mids get in. This way, 15o teams get a chance in addition to their conference tourney.
If 100 teams fold because of unions I'd be all for that too--- it would just bring us back to the # of teams there were in the 80s which was the height of quality d1 ball. The scholarships wouldn't be lost, they would just playing d2 instead of d1.

I don't think the NCAA tournament will EVER change at least I certainly hope not. The first weekend IS the NCAA tournament. Mid-majors make it the event that it is. Plus there are a lot of high-majors who don't play football too are a HUGE part of the NCAAs. CBS/Turner signed a big deal so I doubt the format is changing anytime soon. Football divisions could be another situation though.
