Nice piece on "The Missing Piece".
There usually seems to be some negative stigma around some transfer situations, but it sounds like Cole is genuinely thrilled to be at Siena, understands the opportunity and potential of this team, and is a vocal leader. I think we'll be lucky to have him for the next three years.

What a great article and a well-spoken young man. Between his work ethic, leadership skills and large goals, it seems like Cole will a hugely positive influence on and off the court--combine that with his being the "best player" (per Poole) and you've got a recipe for true team success.

Not sure how Rob would define "best player" when he refers to Patrick Cole, but from what I've seen, Cole is as good as anybody on the team. He's aggressive with the ball, crashes the boards, can handle the ball well enough (I'd say 7.5 out of 10), runs the floor well, ball-hawking type of defender, and is guaranteed to get a shot off under ANY circumstances. Tends to be a bit out of control at times, and does make turnovers, but that's part of being as aggressive as he is. Guessing nine months into the future, I'd say he'll start at either the 2 or 3, with Rob starting where Cole doesn't. He will be an excellent addition to the team.

I think Cole will start at SG next year with Rob Poole at his more natural SF position. Wright, of course, starts at PG and Lavon Long at PF and probably Bisping at center at least to start the season (I think JO and Wolfe could make a push to start at center as well). Our bench will be very strong too - we should be able to go at least 10 or 11 deep.
The year sitting was tough for Cole and the team but should help next season. If Pat buys in (and I'm confident he will) he will be a HUGE addition to the starting line-up next year. With the freshmen making the sophomore jump and adding another recruit or two (Paige and hopefully Taplin) we will have a team that can legitimately compete for the MAAC championship both regular season and postseason.

We often talk about the Saints being a player or two away--well Patrick is one of those players we need. Cant wait to see him in uniform

That article makes me proud to be a part of the Siena community and even more confident in JP. He seems like a real genuine guy, something I really appreciate.

I'm not saying he's not, but what are we basing our very high expectations for Patrick on? Coppin State does not play at as high a level as Siena and he only started about half the games and I didn't think his stats were that incredible, were they? Please educate me, thanks!

Seeing what he's done in practices. He's on the "B" team against the starters and still can get his shot off any time he wants too. In addition to practices, it's simply listening to the players & coaches talk about him. Don't even need to view the fact that he was the high scorer or 2nd high as a freshman on his team. The only down side I can see is if he doesn't play team ball. I don't expect that to be an issue, but it's the only negative I can see.

Go and look at what he did and who he did it against. Coppin may be a shit team in a shit league, put Cole had his best performances in up games. Scored the following against high-majors as a freshman: Arizona St. (13 pts.), Texas (15 pts.) and USC (25 pts.). Can you name anyone currently on the roster that you could count on to consistently do that against such competition?

He really impressed me during the Fordham game - Siena broke the bench huddle early and the 5 players headed to midcourt to await the Rams. Patrick went out to them and was very animated giving them some guidance and strong leadership. I have never seen a redshirt player take such an active role on his own. Since Jimmy has already set the underclassmen captain precedent I see Patrick as one of our co-captains next year. The kid is for real.

Comparison of Hymes this year vs Cole last year
MPG - Hymes at 22.7 to 22.4 PPG - Cole 10.3 to 10.1 APG - Hymes 2.6 to 2.2 RPG - Cole 2.8 to 1.9 SPG - Cole 1.2 to 0.6 TPG - Hymes 2.3 to 3.1 FG% - Hymes .402 to .325 3P% - Hymes .339 to .300
I take all the "best player on the team" talk with a grain of salt, however, I still think there is almost zero chance he is going to wind up a bust and he could develop into the best player on the team.
