I am not one pushing Siena to move up to the A10 but this, to me, is a sign that Siena is going to continue to emphasize rather than de-emphazie athletics in the coming years.

I think he is still the AD but now is also on the board. It gives athletics a "seat at the table". At least that is my read.

It's not necessarily uncommon for ADs to also be VPs.

Congrats to John - and I agree Nolasaint Siena is going to continue to emphasize athletics Mullen said that expanding the Cabinet will allow the College to more effectively pursue the goals outlined in Living Our Tradition: The Strategic Plan for Siena College.

I have worked in higher ed for 40 years. It is no common at all for Athletic Directors to also have the vice president title. I think this is a reflection of the importance of athletics in Siena's strategic plan and (regardless of what many on this site may think) the outstanding professional work that John has done over the years.

I don't think D'arg is all that great and I don't think he's terrible. Keeping the athletes focused on academics has been great as has some of his basketball hires (Fran Mac, Paul Hewitt). But we also really haven't had much success in other sports other than Men's Basketball. I know that is our flagship sport and drives the bus, but I can't think of another sport where we have been consistently good over a 5-10 year stretch during his 20+ years. I'm not trying to beat him up I'm just surprised some folks here think he's been great.
I'm probably wrong!

John has done a tremendous job growing the entire Siena athletic program. We, quite naturally, focus on basketball and primarily the men's team but all of the other programs have grown by leaps and bounds under John. He has had an amazing career at Siena - initially as SID, then acting AD, AD and now a VP! Congratulations to John - well deserved recognition and his position on the board will only help to grow and nurture Siena sports.

The soccer program is solid. Those programs don't get much ink but they are great representatives of Siena College.

I'm not challenging you - I'm just surprised the programs you referenced have been good or are getting good. Have we won any Maac titles in these sports? Not trying to be obstinate I just don't follow the sports other than MBB, WBB and baseball.

I've been in FL for several years now and I can tell you the soccer program has garnered attention outside of the Capital District and MAAC. Not saying the program is huge or anything like that but soccer is the biggest sport in the world ... so being good gets the school attention nationwide...
