www.siena.edu/pages/179.asp?item=336516Obviously this isn't "new" news, but I guess the Campaign was formally launched and $34 million of the $50 million has been committed. This includes the funding for the renovations to the ARC and the new practice facility. As it relates specifically to the ARC renovation, $1.2 of the $6 mil has been committed. You can see those details: sienacampaign.com/portfolio/athletics/Rumor has it KK will be announcing shortly he is donating the money for the naming rights to the court.

Lets hope that the Board of Trustees uses a good portion of the $50M to raise Siena's academic profile.
Siena's basketball is important to all of us, but its academic profile is more important in the long run
There is absolutely no reason why Siena should have such a poor USNews ranking at 126 in the narrow Liberal Arts category.
Capice?

I came here looking for good deals on minivans. I've been waiting on service ever since. Believe me, I will not be kind when I fill out my customer service questionnaire.

Academic profiles are pretty much insignificant and tantamount to academic gerrymandering for pre-ordained results. As often as not the quest for high ranking (and many colleges put a premium on such rankings) interferes with a true and full academic experience.
Siena’s rise in athletics (b-ball) is the single event that has added to the College’s name and expansion of its brand. Take away b-ball and the academic franchise would diminish considerably, IMO. However, why Siena would build a “practice facility” when it already has the ARC is bewildering.

However, why Siena would build a “practice facility” when it already has the ARC is bewildering. The ARC is shared with the women's volleyball team and non-athletic campus events. It would be important for the campus to continue to have a space of that size for its general use, and for the men's and women's basketball teams to have their own space right next to it.

Siena had to update the ARC and build practice facility to not only stay ahead of everyone in MAAC but to compete on the recruiting trail – with the likes of St Joes’ Umass, VCU, George Mason etc—all of whom have built or in process of building new practice facilities. Personally I don’t think you build a 17 million dollar practice facility to play in the MAAC – but that’s just my opinion

Well, athletically, our athletes graduate (we have had one of the highest graduate rates in the country if I am not mistaken), so that is important to some parents that their son/daughter gets their degree while playing a sport.
But I agree- if our athletic teams do well, that usually benefits the academics a lot. It is usually not the other way around. I can tell you that some folks where I now work know Siena because of some sport- soccer, basketball, or even lacrosse. The athletic brand does help our graduates get jobs in my opinion.

Right - plus and this is a big one long term: Siena receives significantly more & better applications when one of our teams is in the news regularly for good stuff of course

Update on this looks like 37 million has been raised now of the 50 million total - and that's without the big donation yet from BigSaintG sienacampaign.com/

Lets hope that the Board of Trustees uses a good portion of the $50M to raise Siena's academic profile. Siena's basketball is important to all of us, but its academic profile is more important in the long run There is absolutely no reason why Siena should have such a poor USNews ranking at 126 in the narrow Liberal Arts category. Capice? There are several hundred liberal arts colleges in the United States. Being 126th puts Siena in the top quartile. I'm cool with that. The individual numerical rankings are arbitrary. Being in the top quartile is more meaningful, as the difference between 1 and 126 are small compared to 1 and say, 500. Capiche? The ARC is shared with numerous teams as a practice and game facility. So everyone has to schedule around everyone else's needs. The new facility eliminates that. Can you imagine Roy Williams or John Calipari having to check when the woman's volleyball team is playing before scheduling practice time? Dedicated facilities is how the big boys do it. And Siena aims to join their ranks eventually.
