First post in a long time. Re good players, John Griffin was able to bring in St Joe's to the ARC. St Joe's had Maurice Martin who was drafted in the 1st round by Denver and played a couple of seasons with them. Before that, around 1968, small college St Peter's came to Gibbons Hall for a game with Siena featuring the great Elnardo Webster, Rich Rinaldi and Ed Strong on their squad. The all-male Siena campus waited all week for that game only to see an easy win by St. Peter's. obits.nj.com/us/obituaries/starledger/name/elnardo-webster-obituary?id=33934352And lastly, way, way back in '47 or so, when the Indians were ranked as high as 11 or 12 nationally, I imagine there were some great players that the Dan Cunha teams played against. Sounds like Dr. Webster had a wonderful and full life. God bless him.

Couple others worth mentioning from the 90s:
Rob Feaster - Holy Cross, averaged 28 PPG Geno Carlisle - Northwestern, also wound up in the NBA Shannon Smith - Milwaukee, averaged 24.5 PPG Evan Eschmeyer - Northwestern, college stud and made NBA JR Bremer - St Bonaventure, averaged 24.6 PPG senior year and made NBA Shawnta Rogers - GW, great college player and a lot of fun to watch Chris Jefferies - Arkansas, freshman when we played him but went on to a good career with Fresno and made the NBA Matt Carroll - Notre Dame, freshman when we played him, wound up in NBA Sirvaliant Brown - GW, averaged an insane 24.6 PPG as a freshman before fizzling out Dahntay Jones - Rutgers, future NBAer (interestingly that team also had Luis Flores)

Great post, great memories. Do you (Hankla, John Dyer, or any older Siena fan) happen to remember if Siena ever played St Bonaventure or Niagara back when Bob Lanier & Calvin Murphy played? Those two were all time greats. That’s before my time following Siena. 🙂

2000s:
Zach Marbury - Rhode Island, never lived up to expectations but was exciting when he came here Mike Wilks - Rice, future NBAer that averaged 20 PPG Smush Parker - Fordham, great name and future NBAer Mike Harris - Rice, college stud and future NBAer Alex Acker & Yakhouba Diawara - Pepperdine, both made NBA Bo McAleb - New Orleans, Sun Belt superstar Taylor Coppenrath - Vermont legend Landry Fields - Stanford, forgotten guy behind the Lopez twins DJ Strawberry & Greivis Vasquez - Maryland, pair of future NBAers Donte Green, Jonny Flynn, Arinze Onuaku - Syracuse, trio of future NBAers Shan Foster - Vanderbilt, SEC POY Scottie Reynolds & Dante Cunningham - Villanova Scotty Hopson - Tennessee, future NBAer Toure' Murray - Wichita State, future NBAer James Anderson & Terrel Harris - Oklahoma State, pair of future NBAers Sherron Collins, Cole Aldrich, Tyshawn Taylor - Kansas, all future NBAers that played with the Morris twins Byron Mullens - Ohio St, future NBAer DJ Kennedy - St John's, future NBAer Shelvin Mack - Butler, forgotten guy on the Heyward team, wound up in NBA E'Twaun Moore, Jajuan Johnson, Robbie Hummel - Purdue, all future NBAers although Hummel did not play against Siena
Skipped a few future HOFers that were pretty unremarkable in college and some guys that fit under Indian Saint's etc

Even if he wasn’t on the team then I did see him play against Siena and against Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA tournament in that small arenas in Mass. wow, that was an upset.

Another "not necessarily a great player" but one of the greatest performances against Siena I have ever witnessed was on 1/7/87 by Gary Bossert from Niagara in the ARC. It was only only a few games into the first season for the 3 point shot. I believe Bossert was a senior guard who stood less than six feet. He basically singlehandedly beat us that night, scoring 37 points in a 97-88 win for Niagara. But what was remarkable was his stat line of 12-14 from beyond the arc. Bossert's only other shots were a 1-3 effort from the line. I fell in love with the three point shot that night. BTW Siena had some pretty good shooters on that team; Ricky Williams, Jeff Robinson, Matt Brady... UGH...........I remember that game, watching it unfold from the bleechers...........and that night he set the record which still stands today for the most consecutive 3pters made in an NCAA game (11).............yowza...........

Going way, way back Siena, led by Billy Harrel, defeated #1 ranked Seton Hall led by Walter Dukes and Richie Regan, future NBAers. Tom Pottenburgh hit a driving layup at the buzzer.

He would have been a great in any era.

There was an upset of Larry Fogle led Canisius way back when. Is he on one of these lists?

It's the off season and I've got too much time on my hands waiting for the season to start. Mike (MTS) probably has a count down calendar on his computer/phone app to the start of the Italy trip, official fall practice, first game, etc.. I was thinking about all the great players Siena played against, literally hundreds of "all time greats". Here's just a few (some even played/were drafted in the NBA). Great memories. Please fill in the hundreds that I missed that you remember Siena playing against unperson, listening on the radio, etc.. Here in no particular order: Kansas - The Morris Twins (Marcus (another ex-Celtic) and Markieff (granted they were freshmen/sophomores when Siena played them, I think). Stanford - The Lopez twins (twice) Brook & Robin Georgia Tech - Travis Best (Siena's 1st NIT victory that year on its way to the NIT Final Four); Derek Favors; Gani Lawal, etc.. Florida State - Sam Cassell and Heisman Winner Charlie Ward (although I'm not sure Ward suited up that game). Charlie the best pro football player the Knicks drafted. Memphis - Derrick Rose, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Joey Dorsey, Robert Dozier, etc.. Pittsburgh - DeJaun Blair (This guy was a beast and I can't believe that called a foul on Kyle Downey defending him ). Ohio State - Evan Turner Louisville - Terrence Williams, Earl Clark, etc.. Butler - Gordon Hayward How about Siena conference Foes: Northeastern - Reggie Lewis (Yes, I'm a Celtics Fan ) St Peter's - Keydren (Kee-Kee) Clark La Salle - Lionel Simmons, Randy (gunner) Woods, Doug Overton, etc.. Niagara - Juan Mendez, Tyrone Lewis, Antoine Mason, Charron (gunner) Fisher, Jeremiah Young, Chris Watson, Alvin Young, etc.. Iona - Jeff Ruland, Steve Burtt, Sr., Steve Burtt, Jr, Gary Springer, Tariq Kirksay, Kevin Bass, Glenn Vickers, Richie Simmonds, Mindaugas Timinskas, A.J. English, Sean Green (I'll never forget Green nor will Mike Dean ). Army - Kevin Houston Rider - Jason Thompson, Monmouth - Justin Robinson Fairfield - Derek Needham, Tyler Nelson, Deng Gai & Ajou Deng (both for defense) Manhatten - Louis Flores, George Beamon, Keith Bullock, etc.. Canisius - Darrell Barley, Michael Meeks, Darren Fenn, I'm missing hundreds but these came to mind w/o thinking too much. Great memories especially when Siena came out on top against them. . Italy trip is from August 18-28 so Siena leaves in 69 days from today.
