The reason coaches never say anything in press conferences anymore is when they tell the truth they get shit on. We’re not an expert 1-3-1 team. It wasn’t some perfectly executed zone. Its a junk defense. Its intended goal was to throw something Marist hadn’t prepped for at them. It worked. What Dunne said is absolutely right. Meh! I would say it was pretty well executed, the box score doesn’t lie, imo Dunne was pretty much inept at making any adjustments last night on the fly. Marist has a tendency to not close out games, & this was another epic collapse. Maybe that’s where Dunne should focus. 1 3 1 is a pretty standard zone trapping passing lane disrupting defense, I wouldn’t call it junk. It was used exactly as it was intended, not something you play all game but something that changes game flow and causes disruption and it was well executed by our club! Props to Carm for breaking it out, & to Dunne - they choked again this season. They have shit - ton of talent are big/strong, & extremely athletic but they’re all selfish 1 on 1 guys. They don’t play like a team. That’s on DUNNE! agree 10000000%.......screw you Dunne, the problem was you have absolutely no clue on the offensive side of the ball, you are strictly focused on defense that you had no idea on how to attack it, like stated above that's on him & his coaching staff..............and certainly it may not have been perfect, but clearly Siena was working on it in practices because of ALL the zones you can employ, this one is easily the most difficult to master (2 excellent coaches who employ this type of zones on a more regular basis over the years is Izzo & Huggins)....you just can't say to the team in a huddle time out "hey let's just play a 1-3-1 zone"......and think of this, we had Hopkins playing a lot on that back line, but you can get away with that because you do want a quicker athlete that can get to corners on the baseline and not worry so much about him being caught in low block as much since you also have a middle player of size (I thought Baer was much better than Stormo) for some rim protection............ now I hope that Carm uses this in other games from here on out (need it vs Jaspers, and Iona would be a good spot as well because they prefer to attack the basket and their perimeter shooting isn't as good as it has been in the Cluess years)...........I would also like him to use the 1-2-2 zone press that Fran always used, again it slows the other team down and eats into the shot clock possession..........presses aren't necessarily used to cause turnovers, but rather just be disruptive enough to cause issues on the offensive side of your opponent.....

Dunne is a bit of a dick! “They junked it up, not like the 1-3-1 was particularly great, but said his comments are not meant in a demeaning way”. Oh sure! Per TU: “One hundred percent, it threw us way off,” Dunne said. “They just junked it up. I don’t mean this in a demeaning way, it wasn’t like the 1-3-1 was particularly great. Clearly, it’s not something that they do. But it just threw us off enough, and when you’re down that big, I’m sure (Maciariello) is thinking, let me throw something out there and if it works, we’ll stick with it, and if it doesn’t, what’s the harm. And that’s what he did.” The reason coaches never say anything in press conferences anymore is when they tell the truth they get shit on. We’re not an expert 1-3-1 team. It wasn’t some perfectly executed zone. Its a junk defense. Its intended goal was to throw something Marist hadn’t prepped for at them. It worked. What Dunne said is absolutely right. No doubt. Dunne was obviously frustrated losing...again...to his rival. Marist losing leads is becoming all too familiar with Foxes fans. Its an issue and it makes him look bad. Carm inserting Baer to play a 1-3-1 zone was a HAIL MARY. It worked, and hopefully opened up his eyes to the value of having another defense you can count on if you play a team that A) cant shoot 3's, or B) you're in foul trouble and want to hide player defensively.

Or C. Need to disrupt game flow or tempo. We sped them up last night, causing turnovers, bad looks and we benefited with multiple easy transition buckets. It was said above & I agree…. I would love to see us occasionally use Fran’s 1-2-2 3/4 court trapping press with Billups playing Edwin’s roll.

Fran has been doing that at Iowa as well.........he also likes to play the 2-3 matchup zone at times, which he did at Siena..........good coaches always have a bag of tricks and of course have to make adjustments all the time, here's hoping Carm's learning curve is trending upwards..........

I think it’s safe to say at this point of the season that Gaines is NOT the star that was promised. Ok, fine. We should all be able to live with that, especially since Rogers is much better than advertised so it’s a fair trade off. HOWEVER, Gaines MUST figure out how to play consistently like he did the last 10m of last night’s game. Don’t dribble too much. Don’t attempt flashy passes. Don’t shoot from outside of 10 feet. Just play good defense. Rebound well. Make an occasional drive to the basket and get to the FT line. If he can be serviceable, I think we have enough talent on this team to be successful without Gaines needing to be a star.
Unfortunately, I think we need one more legit shooting threat on this team in order to be really good. We only have 2 in Hop and Colby. That makes it really difficult to rest either of them without risking a scoring drought. I think Carp keeps getting better and I love having his defense and his ability to take it to the hole anytime he wants but the kid can’t shoot. Billups is tremendous. His athleticism, his defense, his energy are all elite level. His offense isn’t bad but he’s not an outside shooting threat at this point. I’d expect this to improve in time but it’s not there yet.
As currently constructed, this roster has talent but also has some holes. Carm clearly LOVES Gaines and will play him close to 40m per game if he stays out of foul trouble. Carp and Billups bring great athleticism and the ability to slash and get to the hole but neither is a good shooter. Rogers and Hop are great shooters but neither are great defenders or athletes/slashers. Javian could potentially bring a little of both but he’s obviously a huge health concern. The bottom line for me is that this year, a lot will come down to Carm finding the right combinations to put out on the floor and the right time to lean more towards athleticism and defense versus the right time to lean more towards the need for shooters.

agree OneIndian- To me it was a bit of sour grapes. Words matter and being gracious in defeat is still a positive. And if so, being un-gracious is a negative. Just my opinion.

I had no problems with Dunne's comments- he admitted Carm going to zone threw foxes for a loop. Dunne is far from John Wooden, especially on offensive side of ball. I personally like the 1-3-1 zone. Seemed to energize our kids, hid Baer defensively and took advantage of him being smart and Mobil. We have a lot of guys in the 6'4" to 6'6" range and again the 1-3-1 plays into that strength. I hope we see more of that zone

Marist blows out Monmouth 84-48. King Rice must not have switched to a zone defense 😝
