Love this time of year and despite COVID, most of us in this board have the spirit and feel the magic. We were disappointed the other night bc of high expectations a n.v d rightfully so. What most of us are forgetting is that IONA, whether we like it or not, are the class of the MAAC lately and Clues recruited bety well and RP rounded out last years class. They had a gut wrenching season trying to get games in and went on shutdown for weeks playing 15ish regular season games.
Given the circumstances, they kept it together and looking at their squad; they are athletic, big, and dynamic. Sure, many in the hoops world aren't sure just what they are. What they are is super well coached, long, athletic. and playing as a unit. They have 6 or 7 players 6'9" and above. What school at any level has that? They are better and RP was better than Carm. Siena is trending on the right direction but we need to keep up athletically with Carm maturing as well.

We have no control over whatever the Iona program does. Sure having a HOF coach that couldnt get a job at any school besides a mid-major gives them a huge recruiting advantage at this level. He's selling them the, "I coached in the NBA, so I can get you there" pitch. Truth is both big kids he has now wont get better playing against MAAC big men. Pitinos presence definitely puts pressure on all the other MAAC programs to recruit better. Cant have any misses, or wasted scholarships.
IF Camper comes back and we hit HR's on 2 transfers, I like our chances against Iona again next year. Losing Ross will really hurt them. They do have a lot of size, but no shot makers. I've seen video of the 4 guys they have coming in. They dont worry me. They might in a few years, but in '22, we'll be fine IF those 2 things I mentioned happen.
I hope Iona wins tomorrow and goes to the NCAA's. The more Pitino sees his face on TV he'll realize how much he misses it, and will probably entertain bigger jobs. Then he can go back up to the level he belongs at.

Sure HJ, Pitino will have a huge presence on all MAAC programs. His post game comments seemed like he was really thrilled with his team, said something like it was one of the best wins he's ever had. Who knows if that is true, but I actually hope he stays at Iona to finish his career. He's 68 yr. old. how many programs hire a 70 yr old coach? I'm not a total fan, but if you remember the Siena v Louisville tourney game in 2009, Pitino was full of praise for the Siena program in the presser. If he stays, he will build a powerhouse, potential sweet 16 program at Iona. He's is in the hall of fame. I actually hope he stays, it will make the MAAC more relevant and force Siena to keep up. We have great recruiting advantages and a terrific young coach. Things are good, but we need to upgrade the roster, and hope Many comes back. Come on, a Siena v. Iona matchup at the TU with Petino and fans would be amazing!

He does he is gone. Besides Siena there is no one to stand in his way. Look at it this way big time school going to hire Pinino or Brown.

The MAAC stage is just too small. The bus trips to Buffalo will get old fast. He's getting his name out there now, and a few bigger programs have already inquired about him. Supposedly theres some huge buyout ($10 mill), but I heard it drops to $5 after this year. If a program is desperate enough, they'll have to pay for him.

Was anything ever decided? One other question. Let’s assume the rumors of Pitino’s interest in Siena a few years ago were true (I think it was) and let’s assume he doesn’t repeat his prior bad behavior the rest of his career. Who wishes we hired him and he was building here what he is doing at Iona?

I think everything worked out for the best. Pitino can help raise the MAAC back to midmajor status and Siena doesn't have to dance with the devil.

As long as Rick Pitino is coaching at Iona the chance that the Saints will compete is that much harder.Sorry, but a year or 2 of recruiting by Pitino can put the rest of MAAC teams in the rear view mirror!GO SAINTS!!

He wanted Siena they did not want to dance with him after the JP fiasco. He was desperate for a job. Some at Siena wanted him but ultimately Brother Ed would not sign off on it. I also can’t believe Iona is paying him a million dollars a year. Maybe 750K.

Keep in mind that Iona got him a year later when his contract demands had lessened. Either way, everything I've heard has said him and Siena were so wildly out of whack on contract numbers that he was never a realistic candidate.

Could ESPN possibly have assigned a worse broadcast crew for the championship game? The play by play guy was awful. No enthusiasm, boring voice, superficial and trite comments. What a lousy showcase for the MAAC. A far cry from championship game on a Monday on ESPN2 with a real broadcast crew.
